This is the 50th anniversary of Earth Day and we hope we can achieve 365 Earth Days per year moving forward.
Plastic pollution is still one of the main challenges we will experience while our climate changes in the years to come. In the immediate future we will need to deal with a respiratory virus that turned into a pandemic and this extreme situation will decrease waste management and collection. We want to urge everyone not to burn plastics at home. If you are in and around Arugam Bay, please collect your recyclables and do not burn it and damage your precious lungs. We are open at the moment so you can drop off your recyclables. Please wash your hands at our foot operated tap, keep distance to our staff and wear a mask. Don't forget to smile under it. 😊😷 Stay safe everyone.

Here at Colombo Design Studio various rapid prototyping methods are utilised to achieve a first look and feel of a concept before moving onto final molding and production of a new product. It helps everybody involved to better understand the product in real life and clear out and correct any snags that we might come across prior to the mass production stage. For this particular prototype shown, we have combined a few methods such as 3 axis CNC machining of wood and other materials, 3D printed finishes and lots and lots of sanding, painting and varnishing to create the final prototype. The investment cost is considerably less and the timelines are short when compared to other traditional methods of prototyping.

Branding:
Island Hostels is a young startup that is aiming big with the goal of a network of connected hostels dotted around the island. They had a logo done, and were looking to find a refined approach with their brand language. We reworked the logo and set the guidelines for marketing/ communication media, such as brochures and helped with the brand identity presence within their properties.
Logo Approach:
The original Island Hostels logo had tried to bring together all the elements of a holiday in Sri Lanka, from the beaches to the city to the palm trees and the food.
We stripped this back to focus on the island but in an abstracted form that would form the basis for a brand identity that would easily adapt to different locations and also different elements of the hostels, such as the room numbers and brochures.
Outcome:
The outcome is a bold logo that is immediately recognisable and yet flexible enough to support multiple colour options and variations across the various hostels both existing and planned.
