Africa Mourns Veteran journalist Shaka Ssali has died
We are deeply saddened by the loss of our brother and comrade Shaka Ssali," former Ugandan Prime Minister Ruhakana Rugunda wrote on X (formerly Twitter). In Kabale, Shaka was a childhood friend of other young people.
"As young men, we would read newspapers, go to meetings, work in the gardens, and talk about politics," Rugunda continued. He made a significant contribution to the media industry, particularly by promoting African causes on Voice of America, and was fervent about both African and global issues.
According to Dr. Rugunda, Ssali played a key role in bringing Africa and the rest of the world together and was a strong supporter of training African journalists.
"His death serves as a reminder to young people to put in a lot of effort and succeed in their chosen fields."
"We mourn the death of Shaka Ssali, an accomplished journalist and proud son of Kigezi, and of Uganda," said Charles Peter Mayiga, premier of Buganda Kingdom.
Generations will be inspired by his voice, wisdom, and commitment to the truth and his career. I offer his family and loved ones my condolences, as well as the Kingdom of Buganda's. Shaka, may you rest in peace.
With Shaka Ssali's passing, an era in African journalism comes to an end.
A legacy that will never be forgotten is left behind by his voice, which was once a weekly staple for millions of viewers throughout the continent.
May his soul be at peace forever.
