Instagram is moving from understanding what people do to understanding what they care about.
Until now, the platform has mainly learned from user behavior – what people watch, like, save, and engage with. But even great content often reaches people who were never likely to become customers.
Now Instagram is testing profile-based Interests, allowing users to add interests directly to their profiles. This means the algorithm may soon learn not only from behavior, but also from what users explicitly say they're interested in.
What does this mean for brands?
📎 Less random reach.
📎 More relevant audience discovery.
📎 Higher-quality traffic.
📎 Better conversion opportunities.
This is why brands should start asking themselves:
Can Instagram clearly understand what category we're in?
If your profile, content, and messaging don't make your niche obvious, it becomes harder for the algorithm to connect you with the right audience.

The goal isn't more reach.
It's reaching the right people.
