Translation: There are β€œProblems with Using Long Words Needlessly”

This was the title of his study on the β€œnegative relationship between complexity and judged intelligence” almost 20 years ago.

Schools normalize using fancy words, but if you want to communicate with the modern consumer, it’s time to keep it simple.

A positioning statement explains what you do, for whom, and how you differ.

Just because you can add it to your website doesn’t mean you should. It’s not for your audience; it’s for your team.

Unlike a vision or mission statement, it’s an internal tool.

It aligns your marketing activities with your brand and value proposition.

And frames the messaging strategies for each stage of your customer journey.

A positioning statement makes it easy to build all your public-facing messaging.

From your verbal and visual identities to your sonic identity.

It’s an evolving tool that will influence your communication.

And close the gap between perception and performance.

Explains the reason you exist beyond making money

β€’ Vision statement
Explains what you want to achieve in 5-20 years

β€’ Mission statement
Explains the actions you will take to achieve your vision

β€’ Positioning statement
Explains what you do, for who, and how you’re different

β€’ Unique value proposition
Explains the benefit a customer receives from your product/service

β€’ Unique selling proposition
Explains the thing you do differently or better than your competitors

Remember these differences to write the most appropriate brand statement.

β€’ Purpose – the reason you exist beyond making money
β€’ Vision – the future you want to achieve in 5-20 yrs
β€’ Mission – the actions you take to create the future you want
β€’ Positioning – how you differentiate from competitors in consumers’ minds
β€’ Unique value proposition - highlights the benefit a customer receives from your product
β€’ Unique selling proposition - what you do different or better than your competitors
