World Blood Donor Day is celebrated on the 14th of June annually around the world. The event is dedicated to honor the blood donors who voluntarily donated their blood on unpaid basis as “A Gift of Life”. World Blood Donor Day was organized for the first time in 2004, in recognition of the selfless individuals who donate their blood to people unknown to them. The slogan for 2024 is “Celebrating 20 years of giving: thank you, blood donors!”.

In Myanmar, there are two national blood banks, with an annual demand of 180,000 units of blood. Before Covid-19 crisis hit Myanmar, the national blood bank in Yangon had about 150 donors a day. Blood donation is considerably safe and done in a clinical setting by skilled medical personnels. A healthy voluntary blood donor can donate every 4 months. If we look at it globally, countries such as Austria, France, Greece and the Republic of Cyprus are revealed to have the highest levels of blood donations globally and it is found that more men have given blood than women in general.

Lifesaving blood transfusions can be for many reasons such as loss of blood due to serious injuries, or surgeries, and certain medical conditions including anemia, leukemia, and kidney diseases. Not everyone is able to give blood. Each donation is tested to find out the donor’s blood group and checked for infections to help ensure that each donation is as safe as possible to transfuse to patients. Researchers are developing artificial blood to use in transfusions. So far, no good replacement for human blood is available.

We should be thankful to the people who donate their blood. And it is important to honor the profound impact they’ve had on both patients and donors and let us all try our best to continue working towards universal access to safe blood transfusions.

Tips: Iron Supplements essential for donating blood that are available in Myanmar –
• TOT’HEMA
• Ferrovit
• Feroglobin
• Orofer

World Multiple Sclerosis Day is observed on May 30th every year. It’s a day to raise awareness about the global barriers to diagnosing MS and providing appropriate treatment to each individual. The theme for this year 2024 is “My MS Diagnosis”, which advocates for early and accurate diagnosis for individuals living with MS.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system (CNS), which includes the brain and spinal cord. Some potential triggers include viral infections, low levels of vitamin D, smoking, and certain autoimmune conditions. Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 40. MS is two to three times more common in women than in men. Today, an estimated 2.9 million people around the world have MS.

Symptoms of MS can vary widely and may include fatigue, weakness, numbness or tingling in the limbs, difficulty with coordination and balance, problems with vision, muscle stiffness or spasms, cognitive changes, and bladder or bowel dysfunction. These symptoms can come and go, or they may persist and worsen over time.

Treatment approaches may include medications to reduce inflammation and manage symptoms, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and lifestyle modifications. Treatment options for multiple sclerosis (MS) include:
1. Oral therapies: such as Mayzent and Zeposia.
2. Injectables: like Copaxone (glatiramer acetate) and Rebif (interferon beta-1a).
3. Intravenous (IV) infusions: Ocrevus (ocrelizumab) is a newer FDA-approved therapy.

For people with MS out there, we encourage them to share their own experience living with the condition. And we should educate the community about MS and its impact. At the end of the day, it is important to remember that raising awareness and supporting the MS community can have a positive impact on research, treatment, and overall well-being.

The month of May is regarded as the National Hepatitis Awareness Month in the United States. The main purpose is to help to improve everyone’s understanding of viral hepatitis transmission and risk factors and to decrease social stigma against viral hepatitis.

If we talk about hepatitis, we can see that the prevalence of hepatitis infection is very common in Myanmar. One of the leading hepatologists in Myanmar states that hepatitis and its complications are the leading cause of death in Myanmar. Hepatitis can be caused by viral infections such as Hepatitis A, B, C Infection, and also excess alcohol consumption, leading to alcoholic hepatitis. A rare condition is autoimmune hepatitis in which your body's immune system attacks your liver.

Hepatitis affects approximately 325 million people globally, leading to liver inflammation, cirrhosis, and even liver cancer. Each year, around 1.4 million people die from hepatitis-related complications.

Here’s what we can do to raise awareness about hepatitis in our community-
· Get Vaccinated against hepatitis A and B, and also encourage others to do the same.
· Get regularly tested for hepatitis B and C, especially if you’re at risk (e.g., healthcare workers, people with multiple sexual partners, or those who inject drugs).
· Spread Awareness about hepatitis prevention, symptoms, and available resources on social media.
· Donate to or volunteer with organizations working on hepatitis awareness and prevention.
· Advocate for policies that improve access to testing and treatment.
· Educate Others about hepatitis and early prevention.

Tips: Hepatitis A, B can be prevented by vaccines if given at early age. Vaccines available in Myanmar are-
· Avaxim (for Heaptitis A)
· Engerix B, Hepavax , Euvax B (for Hepatis B)
· Hexaxim, Pentaxim (for Hepatis B, combination vaccine)

World Asthma Day (WAD) is observed on May 7, 2024, and is organized by the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA). For this year 2024, GINA has chosen the theme as “Asthma Education Empowers”. By empowering people with accurate information, we can improve asthma outcomes and reduce avoidable morbidity and mortality.

Asthma is one of the most common chronic non-communicable diseases that affects over 260 million people and is responsible for over 450000 deaths each year worldwide, most of which are preventable. In low-middle-income countries, lack of access to inhaled medications contributes to over 90% of asthma-related deaths.

Supporting World Asthma Day is a commendable initiative. Here are some ways you can contribute:
1. Raise Awareness: Educate your family, friends, and community.
2. Learn About Asthma: its symptoms, triggers, and management.
3. Promote Asthma-Friendly Environments: such as smoke-free zones and green initiatives.
4. Show empathy towards individuals with asthma.

Even small actions can make a significant impact and we can create a world where asthma is better understood, managed, and prevented for people.

World Malaria Day 2024 is observed every year on April 25th. This day serves as an opportunity to raise awareness, advocate for prevention, and work together to combat this global health challenge. Among the mosquito-borne diseases, Malaria is the most common in the tropical countries in Southeast Asia region including Myanmar. Globally in 2022, there were an estimated 249 million malaria cases and 608 000 malaria deaths in 85 countries.

Malaria is a serious and sometimes fatal mosquito-borne infectious disease caused by parasites of the Plasmodium genus. It is transmitted to humans through the bite of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes. Common symptoms of malaria include fever, chills, headache, muscle aches, and fatigue. If left untreated, Malaria can progress to severe illness and death within 24 hours.

Here are some effective strategies to prevent Malaria:
1. Use Bed Nets and sleep under insecticide-treated bed nets.
2. Take Antimalarial Medications if you’re traveling to a malaria-endemic area.
3. Wear Protective Clothing.
4. Apply Insect Repellents.
5. Eliminate Breeding Sites by regularly emptying or covering containers that collect water.
6. Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS) in malaria-prone areas.
7. Seek Early Diagnosis and Treatment if you experience symptoms like fever, chills, and headache after being in a malaria-endemic area.
8. Community Education and Awareness about malaria prevention, symptoms, and available resources.

The most important thing we have to remember is that malaria is preventable, and collective efforts can make a significant impact in reducing its spread. No antimalarial drug is 100% protective, and prevention should also include personal protective measures such as insect repellent, long sleeves, and bed nets.

Tip - Common antimalarial medications used in Myanmar are as follows:
1. Chloroquine
2. Hydroxychloroquine (Plaquenil)
3. Atovaquone/Proguanil (Malarone)
4. Artemether-Lumefantrine (Coartem)
5. Quinine Sulfate (Qualaquin) with Doxycycline
6. Primaquine

Parkinson’s disease is a neurodegenerative condition that affects movement and is the second most common after Alzheimer’s. Parkinson's Disease affects more than 8.5 million people worldwide currently. The likelihood of males developing the illness is 1.5 times higher than that of females.

This year 2024, the theme for Parkinson’s Awareness is the ABCs of PD. “A” stands for “Anxiety”, “B” for “Balance”, and “C” for “Care Partner”, as featured by the Parkinson’s Foundation in the United States. It emphasizes the complexities of Parkinson's disease, highlighting that it is more than simply tremors; it also includes mental health issues, sleep disruptions, and discomfort.

Here are some ways for us to provide meaningful support to PD patients:
· Be Patient and Compassionate
· Encourage Physical Activity
· Assist with Daily Tasks
· Medication Management
· Nutrition and Hydration
· Emotional Support

We should be conscious that everyone's Parkinson's experience is unique, and our presence and understanding can have a big impact on their quality of life. Let us celebrate and increase awareness of Parkinson's disease, because every contribution is valuable. We can establish a helpful network among patients, caregivers, and medical professionals.

The theme for World Health Day 2024, “My health, my right”, aims to champion the right of every person everywhere:

• To access quality healthcare
• To get educated about and on health information.
• For safe drinking water.
• Inhaling clear air.
• Nourished well in terms of foods.
• Living in good buildings.
• Decent working as well as environmental conditions.
• Freedom from discrimination.

According to the constitutions of at least 140 nations, everyone has the right to health care. However, many countries have not enacted legislation guaranteeing their citizens’ access rights to medical services. Surprisingly, WHO data from 2021 shows that 4.5 billion people or more than half of the world population were without full basic care.

WHD 2024 is focused on emphasizing how important it is to protect and promote health as a fundamental human right. To ensure that everyone may benefit from excellent health, we should raise awareness to promote well-being for all.

On the second of April every year, World Autism Awareness Day (WAAD) is recognized by the United Nations and other related organizations that are meant to raise awareness on autism and encourage acceptance.
Autistic people may communicate and behave differently compared to normal individuals. A few autistics need little help because they can do things for themselves, while others require much assistance in their daily lives. Furthermore, medical practitioners and researchers are turning towards embracing neurodiversity approach which advocates for acceptance, support and inclusion of those with autism.

2024 aims to focus on the contributions that autistic people make in various sectors:
At Home: Autistic people enhance the family unit as well as communities. A more inclusive environment can be created upon appreciating their unique strengths and limitations.
At Work: Employees with autism have diverse skills that make them valuable in any organization. Employers and colleagues can foster an inclusive atmosphere that allows them to thrive
In the Arts: Culture cannot be complete without the contribution of artists who have autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Through their creativity and distinct outlooks, these individuals add value to human knowledge about existence.
In Policymaking: Positive changes are brought by self-advocacy among autistics plus their supporters.

Autistic individuals can rely on some types of therapy to help them manage communication and behavior difficulties, such as Occupational Therapy (OT), Speech or Physical Therapy and Social Stories from the child’s point of view.
However, the autism community still faces discrimination and challenges in many aspects of day-to-day life hence it is necessary to promote global awareness and acceptance.

Let us continue to celebrate diversity, advocate for rights, and appreciate the valuable contributions of autistic individuals! 🧩💙

Tip – According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC):
1 in 150 children received an autism diagnosis in 2000.
1 in 68 children received an autism diagnosis in 2010.
1 in 54 children may receive an autism diagnosis currently.
It’s estimated that over 5 million adults may be living with autism diagnosis today.
