The UN General Assembly has backed a move towards using a world map that shows the size of Africa more accurately.

The resolution received support from 164 countries and challenges the traditional Mercator projection, which makes areas closer to the poles appear much larger than they really are.

Africa is around 14 times larger than Greenland, despite the two often appearing similar in size on traditional maps. The vote is non-binding, but could influence how maps are used by institutions around the world. The United States was the only country to vote against the resolution, while six countries abstained.

Maltese residents spent an average of €131 per night on tourism trips in 2024, according to Eurostat.

That placed Malta among the EU’s highest spenders and well above the EU average of €97 per night. Luxembourg topped the ranking at €176, followed by Austria at €170 and Sweden at €140.

The figures cover spending on transport, accommodation, restaurants, activities and other tourism-related expenses.

The Maltese lira: the money Malta used before the euro arrived in 2008. And older Maltese remember what it could buy. A cup of coffee for 23 cents. Bread and butter for 10c. A whole T-bone steak dinner with eggs and chips for Lm1.50. These aren’t made-up figures; they come from a real Maltese restaurant menu from the late 1970s that resurfaced online. So, what was a single Lm1 actually worth? When Malta switched to the euro on the 1st of January 2008, the official rate was fixed forever at Lm1 = €2.33. But that simple conversion hides the real story: because thanks to decades of inflation, a Lm1 coin in 1980 could buy far, far more than €2.33 does today.

The prosecution is set to appeal Yorgen Fenech’s acquittal over the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia, potentially opening the way for a retrial.

According to Times of Malta, the Attorney General is expected to file the appeal soon, following the 8–1 jury verdict that cleared Fenech of complicity in the murder and conspiracy to kill her.

The appeal will need to be based on legal or procedural grounds, rather than simply disputing the jury’s assessment of the evidence. Three judges will hear the case.

Speaking at the State of the Nation Conference, Roberta Metsola said citizens must be able to trust that institutions are working in their interests.

“The citizen must be sure that the State is on their side, not on the side of power,” she said.
Addressing the fallout from Yorgen Fenech’s acquittal, Metsola said the verdict had left Malta with “many more questions”, adding that the pursuit of justice must continue beyond those who physically carried out Daphne Caruana Galizia’s murder.

Nearly half of people aged 25 to 34 in Malta had a tertiary qualification in 2025, according to Eurostat.

The share stood at around 48%, up sharply from roughly 18% in 2005, showing a significant rise in higher education attainment over the past two decades.

Across the EU, 44.8% of people in this age group had completed tertiary education in 2025.

Abela said the government is ready to face the debate, while also insisting that the jury’s decision must be respected and should not be turned into a partisan political issue.
