⏱️ Malta is small enough to drive across in 40 minutes. So why does the average commuter spend 59 minutes a day just getting to and from work?

We asked 472 people how traffic is changing life in Malta. Here's Part II.

🚗 You can cross the whole island in 40 minutes, yet the daily commute eats up almost an hour.
📍 For over 1/3 of residents (36.7%), the commute exceeds 30 minutes each way.
🚌 Only 18% use public transport weekly or more and nearly half of those who do rate the service as poor.
💡 So what's the fix? 66% want better public transport, 63% support remote working, and 50% back mass transit systems.
👩‍💻 Among 25–34 year olds, support for remote work jumps to 78%.

The frustration is real but so is the appetite for change.

The answers were hard to ignore.

📊 95% say traffic is a big problem and in the Northern Harbour, 83% call it a very big problem.
🚙 76% say they couldn't live without a car (closer to 83% in the Northern & South Eastern regions).
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Malta basically runs on one car per adult - 76% of four-adult households own three or more.
🤝 66% never carpool, but almost half would if it were an option.

🏠 41.7% of 25–34 year olds in Malta say they are seriously considering moving abroad as a result of cost of living.

That's one finding from Wave 1 of our MAS Public Opinion Survey on housing and cost of living, fielded April 2026.

Other headline findings:
🔹 32.7% of renters spend more than half their monthly household income on rent
🔹 54% disagree that someone their age can realistically buy a property in Malta within 5 years
🔹 85% are aware of government housing schemes; 12.7% have used or applied for one
