Bangladesh has elected its new President — Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, a secular leftist and veteran of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).
Alamgir, 78, previously served as secretary general of the BNP and secured 255 votes against the 88 received by Oli Ahmed, a retired army colonel and candidate of an 11-party opposition alliance led by the Islamic political party Jamaat-e-Islami.
He was elected following the early resignation of former President Mohammed Shahabuddin for health reasons.
