Standard Bank Malawi has taken a significant step towards environmental stewardship by allocating an additional MK50 million towards re-afforestation efforts along the Dr. Saulos Chilima Highway and Mzimba Street in Lilongwe.

As the lead financier of Malawi's first six-lane highway, Standard Bank recognizes the importance of balancing economic development with environmental responsibility. Chief Executive Phillip Madinga stated, "As we invest in Malawi's growth, we acknowledge that economic development and environmental responsibility go hand-in-hand. We are not only building Malawi's future but also a sustainable macroeconomy with environmentally suitable infrastructure".

Lilongwe City Mayor Peter Banda praised Standard Bank's initiative, saying, "Initiatives like this will help us achieve our goal of making Lilongwe a green and clean city."

MALAWI WELCOMES CHINA'S CROSS BORDER PAYMENT SYSTEM

Standard Bank Malawi has raised hopes of helping Malawian customers conduct trade with China in real time by using an alternative cash transfer system to the U.S dollar-dominated SWIFT.

The hope has been raised after the parent company in South Africa, the Standard Bank Group became the first African bank to participate directly in China’s Cross-Border Interbank Payment System (CIPS), a major milestone in facilitating Africa-China trade. The CIPS is designed to provide a more efficient, low-cost, and convenient way to conduct international RMB payments, and serves as an alternative to the global SWIFT network for yuan-denominated transactions. While the service is currently live in South Africa, it will be extended to other markets, including Malawi, soon.

“As a Group, we have always embraced a pioneering spirit to deliver solutions that meet our clients’ evolving needs and support economic growth. The introduction of CIPS is another example of this commitment. Previously, we led the way with Africa-China Banking, which allows Malawians to order goods from government-certified suppliers in China while the bank manages the logistical complexities on their behalf. These initiatives reflect our dedication to simplifying trade and unlocking opportunities for businesses and individuals alike, " said Chief Executive Phillip Madinga in a statement.

STANDARD BANK WOMEN IN KASUNGU SLEEP-OVER TO SUPPORT MOTHERS

A group of 10 women employees from Standard Bank Malawi has arrived at the Maternity wing of Kasungu District Hospital to spend the night with expectant mothers in support of this year's Mothers Fun Run (MFR).

A brainchild of Malawi's leading private newspaper publishing company Nation Publications Ltd, the annual MFR raises funds for public health centres providing care for mothers.

This year's MFR targets Kasungu, with the main activity scheduled for November 22, 2025.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of Standard Bank's partnership with NPL for MFR.

"We are here to provide companionship, care and support for expectant mothers. We came to experience with them the pains and joys of motherhood, and highlight the importance of quality maternal care," said Agnes Chipatala who is leading the Standard Bank "sleep over" team in Kasungu.

The group has been briefed on the challenges facing pregnant women in Kasungu by DHO Emmanuel Golombe, and will now proceed to the wards.
