THE FIRST MALAWIAN 🇲🇼 TO OWN AEROPLANES.

Captain Stanley Edingtone Masauli once owned a fleet of 6 aeroplanes in the 1980s.

Masauli was born in 1945 and died in 2012 at the age of 67 he was from Gomani Village, T/A Mulumbe in Zomba.

Masauli became a member of Luchenza flight club and started learning how to fly under the supervision of his instructor Bob Mckinley using a single engine Cherokee 140 plane which was named 'Whisky Charlie'.. he later on bought the plane

By then he was the only Malawian black person in the flight club.

On 30 June 1979 Masauli successfully took off and landed from Zomba airport thereby completing his first solo fright.

Masauli later on became Malawi’s first black certified Flight Instructor/Examiner and went on to own a fleet of six aeroplanes under the name AIR CHARTERS LTD.

THE PURCHASE OF HIS FIRST PLANE

Masauli and his friend Neville Calliste teamed up and bought the Whisky Charlie plane at MK12,000.

He paid K2,500 straight away and was going to be paying K500 every month plus another K4,000 for insurance.

Neville who was an expatriate time came to leave Malawi leaving Masauli as the sole proprietor of the plane.

Maintaining the plane was so costly as plane engineers charged Masauli exorbitant prices...

To minimise the costs Stanley Masauli fully paid for his young brother Horrace Masauli to go to South Africa to learn how to fix planes.. Horrace became his plane maintenance engineer.

AIR CHARTERS LIMITED.
After buying The Whisky Charlie, Masauli bought anothe plane named Whisky Echo.

Expatriates constructing the M1 road used to charter his planes to and from the northern region to Chileka..

Thats when the idea of establishing AIR CHARTERS LTD was hatched

At the height of his business Masauli had a total of 6 planes that formed Air Charters' fleet.

THE YOUNGEST PERSON TO SERVE AS A POLICE OFFICER IN MALAWI.

History of Law Enforcement in Malawi, historian and author Victor Sibale will spotlight a remarkable figure: Mateyo Numero, the youngest person ever to serve as a police officer in Malawi—and possibly in the entire Commonwealth.

Born into a family deeply rooted in service—his grandfather in the King's African Rifles (KAR) and his father, Sergeant Numero, a Parade Instructor at Zomba Police Training School—Mateyo’s journey began around 1940 when the Police Band was being formed. At a time when music schools were nonexistent, officers were invited to try their hand at instruments. Among the curious onlookers was young Mateyo, just 11 or 12 years old.

When seasoned officers struggled with the cornet, young Mateyo stepped forward. To everyone’s amazement, he played it effortlessly—like a duck to water! At just 14, he had become indispensable. In recognition of his extraordinary talent, the Police assigned him a service number—1353—and placed him on the payroll, officially making him a police officer. A miniature uniform was tailored just for him.

Mateyo Numero went on to enjoy a 35-year career in the Malawi Police Force, retiring in 1976. He became the first Malawian Director of Music in the Police, composing numerous songs—including the ever-popular “Don’t Worry”. After retirement, he continued to pass on his legacy by teaching wind instruments at St. Andrew’s International School in Blantyre. Among his students (outside the school) was none other than *Dan Sibale, Malawi’s celebrated saxophonist and member of the legendary Ma Nyasa Band.

Tonight’s presentation is not just about institutions—it’s about individuals like Mateyo Numero whose talent, dedication, and history deserve to be remembered.

TRUE ABOUT NGURU YA NA WAMBE

Nguru ya na Wambe was perhaps the greatest mythological item in Chewa history. What or where is it? According to T.B. Mzaza, from the construction of Kamuzu's palace to its final mention in the history of the battle between the Amabutho or Amapupo and Chewa, the history of the Nawambe is filled with intrigue and divine mystery. The Palace designed to portray the structure of the sword's handle...

T.B. Mzaza studied the most famous histories regarding its whereabouts:
The terms 'nguru', meaning, sword, and ya na', of the, and Wambe also spelt Dambwe, means Heaven..was said to have been hidden deep at the cave on Mphepo Hill (the smallest hill on Kasungu Mountain where the Waterboard tank is located), tucked away in the Palace's tunnels that lied deep underground.

The Amabutho (warriors) whose impi or military was composed of the Zanzi and Abafo (the original Amabutho from KwaZulu and the natives who were incorporated and assimilated) were the cowards who fled Shaka, 3500km, and on the battle with the great Chewa warriors of Kasungu called Kayombe, the Nguru ya Nawambe disappear during this period invasion in 1867., it was taken to Mchenga wa Nkhululu Village at Mtupa wa Kathemba or Chiwengo Village as for safe keeping. The Amabutho had come to confiscate this ancient relic.

While our history books in Malawi finds no physical trace, T.B. Mzaza has always gives us a spiritual perspective, denoting that the Nguru ya Nawambe, Sword of the Heaven, is at Kamuzu's Palace in Kasungu. He has seen it with his own eyes. It remains hidden at Kabvungute Cave or and safely in the presence of the Katema Kapindula's tomb. Nguru ya Nawambe was a powerful symbol of the Chewa people. PART 1

Ali Maunde was first and popular trader in that area before it was industrialized. He owned shops. He was buying and selling groceries.

He was a Yao man. Maybe you hear people saying "we are going to Alimaunde.", they mean we are going to Kanengo.

The first black Malawian Woman to go to Secondary School.

Meet Joyce Lincy Ndovi, she went to Blantyre Secondary School (BSS) in October 1947. She was the only girl in a class of Dick Matenje, Masauko Chipembere, D D Phiri et al. They were 24 students: 23 boys and 1 girl. Joyce had come from Livingstonia School to BSS. Before her a white woman and a coloured woman had been to BSS. Black women like Vera Chirwa came after her.

In 1850, a man named Che Jumbe was discovered in Mangochi (🇲🇼). He lived in a place now known as Cape Maclear. Local residents were aware of his presence and said he lived in a cave, consumed raw meat, and used only rudimentary tools, he used to scratch a rock near the Cape Maclear. You can find the scratches there if you visit the place.

He reportedly walked naked—he was placed in a bag solely for photographing him—and was described as having limited intellectual abilities. Che Jumbe could pronounce a few words, though much of his speech was unclear as he was a Yao.

He was noted for distinctive physical features, including a receding forehead, a protruding jaw, a large nose, and unusually long arms that nearly reached his knees.In 1875 Dr. Robert Laws, a Scottish missionary, had to visit Cape Maclear to see this man but he didn't see him for weeks of searching. He then thought of opening Livingstonia Mission there . He led the mission, but due to high malaria mortality, moved the settlement north to Bandawe in the 1880s and finally to the Khondowe plateau in 1894.

Some scientists who examined him compared his skull to Zinjanthropus remains and noted similarities. Sensationalist tabloids quickly labeled him "the missing link," portraying him as the last living Zinjanthropus. However, after careful scientific study, researchers concluded that he most likely suffered from microcephaly.
