NEW from Facebook! 📺 Meet the new Portal family: smart video calling on your TV and anywhere in your home! ☎️
Facebook wants to take over your television with a clip-on camera for video calling, AR gaming and content co-watching.
*NOTE* that last one, "co-watching!!" Just like Watch Parties where we can host videos on our Facebook business pages, personal timelines and groups, the Portal TV has a "Watch Together" feature that Facebook says, "lets you watch shows like 'Red Table Talk' and other Facebook Watch content together with friends or family who aren’t there with you."
Brilliant.
Now, of course, this is all predominantly aimed at entertainment, right? But imagine, my fellow marketers, in the future -- creating a unique Facebook Live video experience where friends of your audience tune in around the world through the Portal TV Watch Together feature ... and you make a special offer where at some point there will be buttons for purchasing real time. All without leaving the Facebook app. It's all evolving so fast! We need to keep an eye on this tech!
And, remember, Facebook's VIDEO MISSION statement is,
“Create shared experiences and a sense of belonging through video.”
It's not about passive, lean-back consumption. It's about creating *community* through video. Love that! 🥰📺
Other Portal TV features include:
📲📺 WhatsApp Calling on Portal
Facebook is adding a new way to connect with your friends on Portal through WhatsApp, in addition to Messenger calling. All WhatsApp calls on Portal are end-to-end encrypted.
👭📺 Story Time AR
Story Time on Portal brings stories to life with animation, music and AR effects. Earlier this year, Facebook announced three new, award-winning children’s book series coming to Story Time: Llama Llama, Pete the Cat and Otto. These new stories are available now.

TechCrunch states, "The new Portal TV lets you hang out with friends on your home’s biggest screen. It’s a fresh product category that could give the social network a unique foothold in the living room, where, unlike on phones where it’s beholden to Apple and Google, Facebook owns the hardware and operating system."
