O'Phalen Adventures, Mexico City (2026)

We were professional theatre people in New York City for over 10 years, then both parents made career shifts after starting a family — Kate got her MPA and Dan became a recruiter. The pandemic was difficult, but gave us the precious gift of remote work. Because of the shift to remote work, our family has never been closer and we are able to pursue our dream of fulltime travel. When we left NYC in 2020, we planned to be away for just the summer on the coast of Maine in a charming and remote coastal village. That summer turned into a year and a half of airbnbs all over the country, which turned into buying and renovating our own RV, which turned into a life as nomads for the foreseeable future! We love exploring museums and cultural immersion as much as we love hiking up mountains and kayaking fjords. We love telling stories with the photos and videos that we take. We love slow travel and spending time at local libraries. And we love the online community that we’ve built for ourselves so that we never feel lonely. We truly love this life we’ve built, and we want to share everything we learn with you!

We definitely fall into the frugal fulltime RV familiy camp, so we don’t have as new a rig or as many gadgets as some of our peers.

BUT I was recently reflecting on some of the bigger RV life purchases that we’ve made that seemed expensive at the time, but actually ended up saving us money down the road. These are a few of them!

This is such a fun way to celebrate a special occasion or even just explore a new city!

I did a bunch of research on what San Franciscans consider to be the most unique or delicious dessert options in their city, and truly you could spend three days doing this and not visit every stop. I chose a few that sounded particularly delicious and were close together and we went with that!

Leave it to San Francisco to be foggy 😶‍🌫️

For real though — we had an amazing day celebrating my 40th in San Francisco doing a DIY dessert crawl! Leave me a comment if you’re interested in a post about the five dessert places we tried 🤤

I brought birthday candles to make a cute birthday video with a view of the bridge, and then the bridge wasn’t visible and the candles wouldn’t stay lit (shout out to my friends for using every match they had trying though) 😂

If there’s anything that traveling fulltime and being 40 years old has taught me is that it’s better than okay when things don’t turn out perfectly 🫶🏼

Thank you to everyone who wished me a happy birthday this weekend, and especially to my little fam who made sure I felt very loved 🥹

We had the most fantastic time in Mexico, and we had the opportunity to visit some parts of the country that I’d never heard of before researching this trip.

I thought I’d share how we spent our 6 months there in case anyone else is planning. No regrets about any of these stops. The only thing we wish we’d had more of was time 🫶🏼

The longer stays were because we had fantastic places to park our RV there, and we used those places as home bases for further exploration using hotels and Airbnbs where we couldn’t take our trailer. That’s why you see some 3 day stays in places where we definitely could have stayed for a month!
