French scholar Jean-François Champollion was born in 1790. He used the Rosetta Stone as a key to deciphering ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs.

It is inscribed three times with a royal decree – in hieroglyphs, Demotic (the native script for daily use) and Ancient Greek.

Champollion discovered that hieroglyphs recorded the sounds of the Egyptian language, laying the foundations for our modern understanding of ancient Egypt.
