Here’s a breakdown of my mastering chain for an Indie Rock song I just finished working on! Let’s dive in! 👇
1. Kilohearts Multiband Compressor
I start by using the Multiband Compressor to control dynamics across different frequency ranges. It helps tighten up the low-end, smooth out the mids, and control any harsh highs.
2. SSL Vintage Drive
Next, I add some character with the SSL Vintage Drive. This plugin is great for adding warmth and analog-style saturation to give your track a rich, punchy tone.
3. Eiosis Air EQ2
Now it’s time to shape the sound! I use Air EQ2 to fine-tune the frequency spectrum, enhancing clarity and removing any muddiness without making the mix harsh. This helps create space and balance between elements.
4. Brainworx BX_Solo
Mid/side processing is key, and the BX_Solo helps widen the stereo image without compromising the center of the mix. It ensures the right elements pop in the mix while maintaining a solid, punchy core.
5. Slate Digital Virtual Tape Machines
For that warm, analog feel, Virtual Tape Machines does wonders. It adds subtle tape saturation, rounding off the high-end and adding a pleasing color that enhances the track’s cohesiveness.
6. Slate Digital FG-X2
To finish it off, FG-X2 is my go-to limiter for loudness. It lets me push the track to commercial levels without sacrificing dynamics or introducing distortion, giving the track that final polished sound. 📈
Mastering isn’t just about loudness—it’s about balance, clarity, and musicality. These plugins help me achieve just that! 🎧
