LETS KNOW MORE ABOUT THE STYLE OF OUR MOST SUCCESSFUL CARTOONIST, DATUK LAT.

Lat's style has been described as reflective of his early influences, The Beano and The Dandy. He has, however, come into his own way of illustration, drawing the common man on the streets with bold strokes in pen and ink. A trademark of his Malay characters is their three-loop noses. Lat paid attention to family life and children because of his idolisation of Raja Hamzah, a senior cartoonist who was also popular in the 1960s with his comics about swashbuckling heroes. Rejabhad, a well-respected cartoonist, was Lat's mentor, and imbued the junior cartoonist with a preference to be sensitive to the subjects of his works. Lat's attention to details gained him popularity, endearing his works to the masses who find them believable and unbiased.

Aside from writing and publishing cartoons, Lat has ventured into the fields of animation, merchandising, and theme parks with his creations. His name and works are recognised internationally; foreign cartoonists, such as Matt Groening and Sergio Aragonés, admire his art, and foreign governments invite Lat to tour their countries, hoping to gain greater exposure for their countries through Lat's cartoons of his experiences in them. After 27 years of living and working in Kuala Lumpur, Lat moved back to Ipoh for a more sedate lifestyle in semi-retirement.

Here in NHillustration, we are truly inpired by his artworks and his contribution in influencing Nusantara style in most of today's arts.

What's The Difference Between Japanese and American Animation?

The Style
The easiest answer is the style: the visual look and feel of Japanese animations vs. American animations, mostly evident in the design of human characters. The distinctive large eyes with numerous reflective highlights and detailed color are the main hallmark of anime, along with small noses and mouths generally denoted by minimal lines. (Even certain styles that favor unrealistically broad, generous mouths depict them using minimal lines.) The style itself uses many angles and flowing, attenuated lines. Things such as eyelashes, hair, and clothing are depicted in more fine detail. The color often uses more variants and shading, with greater attention paid to non-outlined highlights and shadows to add more depth.

In contrast, American animation either falls into attempts at comic-book style "realism" (as realistic as that can get, anyway) or grossly exaggerated, comical cartoon characters with rounded, highly exaggerated features. There's usually less detail, focused instead on using tricks of style to imply the detail in more subtle, understated fashion, and less attention to shading instead of solid block colors save for in dramatic scenes that require it.

As for me, my stroke is more into japanese animation as i was fed with a lot of animes growing up. But here in NHillustration we are keen to deliver the best quality and realism into our portrait so dont forget to get yours now!

Have you ever heard of Hayao Miyazaki? or also known as The Walt Disney of Japan.

If you are into animes or follow the stream of japan animation industry it would be a sin not to know this guy. He is the guy who has directed a lot of classic animes such as Spirited Away and My Neighbour Totoro.

But what is really amazing about Miyazaki is not about his achievement in animation industry, but his stand in the modern world trying to deliver the message of peace with his subtle storytelling.

His story often translated as the struggle of an individual amidst the hardship. This look pretty common in today's trend of story telling but some of his story really have a shocking meaning behind it. As in spirited away, the whole movie is a translation of prostitution in Japanese Culture. While my neighbour Totoro was theorized as the struggle of 2 children to adapt with the poverty and the lost of mother so they start imagining Totoro as a guardian figure.

In reality, Hayao Miyazaki has been really expressive in delivering his view in the protesting wars. Miyazaki refused to attend the 75th Academy Awards in Hollywood, Los Angeles in 2003, in protest of the United States' involvement in the Iraq War, later stating that he "didn't want to visit a country that was bombing Iraq". He did not publicly express this opinion at the request of his producer until 2009, when he lifted his boycott and attended San Diego Comic Con International as a favor to his friend John Lasseter. Miyazaki also expressed his opinion about the terrorist attack at the offices of the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo, criticizing the magazine's decision to publish the content cited as the trigger for the incident.

That is pretty much about the guy.

The not-so-brief History of Portraiture

The 21st century is yet to be defined by a style of portraiture but at Fabulous Noble we believe that contemporary portraits will be defined by new media; much in the same way that the art world has developed. We believe that the potential for outmost creativity and excellence resides in illustration and design.

Portraits have been around since the beginning of time as a means to describe not only physical features but more importantly power and status. Testaments of portraiture as a genre can be seen as early as Ancient Egyptian wall paintings of gods and pharaohs.

Ancient Greeks also had fascination with portraiture, mostly in its sculpted form, representing both gods and lay people (who through art were elevated to the status of a deity). Romans followed a similar tradition borrowing motifs from Ancient Egypt and Greece and developing a flair for portrait busts of key power personalities. Ancient Greek and Romans were also the ones who started the tradition of depicting figure-heads on coins. During the Middles ages portraiture declined and was strictly confined to donor portraits.

The Renaissance saw the re-invention of portraiture in its modern sense and is a pivotal moment in the history of the genre. Predominately portraying royals, nobles, and religious figures, Renaissance portraits concentrated on the status and personality of the sitter through the depiction of objects of characterisation (such as a globe for a well travelled sitter).

We believe that the potential for outmost creativity and excellence resides in illustration and design as it is not a saturated field nor has it been perfected by old masters. Illustrators and graphic designers have gained momentum in the past decade and represent the pulse of both the art world and the media world. Fabulous Noble serves as a platform to make their art more accessible to the public.

By the Fabulous Noble Team.
