So well ahead of his time..

Anton Stankowski (1906–1998), a German graphic designer, photographer, and painter, pioneered Constructive Graphic Art. In 1972, he won a Deutsche Bank logo design competition with his iconic "slash in a square," introduced in 1974. The minimalist blue logo, with a 53-degree diagonal line, symbolizes dynamic growth within a stable environment, reflecting trust and modernity. Stankowski’s design, rooted in his constructivist philosophy, remains timeless, shaping Deutsche Bank’s global identity.

72 year old logo, still going strong. A testament to good, solid fundamental design. The highlight here is that little bit of typographic treatment: that slightly elongated "A". Remember, a logo does not need to be an artistic masterpiece. A logo is first and foremost an identifier. A logo doesn't even have to tell a story or a brand philosophy. Sure, if you can afford a designer who can communicate all that in the truncated visual language of design then go for it. But it's not a deal breaker. A logo just needs to be unique enough to be easily identified and recalled. Simple, yet not easy to achieve.

So true.. I preach this to my clients all the time. Most people want to tell a long winded & comprehensive story with their logos. The idea is for the logo to be a simple unique identifier, that can be easily recalled so when the brand interaction points occur, the target audience can make the association between logo and brand experience immediately.
