Nasi Kerabu is a beloved Malaysian dish that showcases the rich culinary heritage of the Kelantanese people. This vibrant and flavorful dish is a sensory delight, captivating diners with its striking blue rice, aromatic herbs, and an array of delectable toppings. Its unique preparation and distinctive taste make it a must-try for any food enthusiast visiting Malaysia. I was very fortunate to stumble upon this place this late morning. I would say its quite identical to the taste I have tried in Kelantan years ago.
Nasi Kerabu is a beloved Malaysian dish that showcases the rich culinary heritage of the Kelantanese people. This vibrant and flavorful dish is a sensory delight, captivating diners with its striking blue rice, aromatic herbs, and an array of delectable toppings. Its unique preparation and distinctive taste make it a must-try for any food enthusiast visiting Malaysia.
The signature blue color of Nasi Kerabu is achieved by infusing the rice with butterfly pea flowers, which impart a natural blue pigment. This not only adds a visual allure to the dish but also contributes a subtle floral note. A medley of fresh herbs such as mint, basil, torch ginger flower (bunga kantan), and kaffir lime leaves form the heart of the herb salad. These aromatic herbs provide a refreshing contrast to the flavorful rice and toppings. I customized with barbeque mutton and chicken and I never regretted at all. The marination and cooking duration is spot on. Kerisik (Toasted Coconut Paste) which I enjoyed most adds a rich, nutty flavor and texture to the dish. It is made by toasting grated coconut until golden brown and grinding it into a paste. Lastly Badu the fermented fish sauce adds a different dimension to the taste.
When I mixed the various components together, each bite has a harmonious blend of flavors and textures. The only setback is there wasn't with banana leaf. Drop me a pm or comment, I would gladly share the treasure with you.
