DTR GROUP secures the 1st outlet for Bonchon with Sunway Malls Group. Schedule to open in June 2026.

Bonchon a fascinating Korean fried chicken chain with a unique origin and a signature crunchy style.

Here are some interesting facts about it:

· Naming: "Bonchon" (본촌) translates to "my hometown" or "original village" in Korean. The name reflects the founder's ambition to share authentic, comforting Korean flavors globally.

· Origin Story: Founded in 2002 in Busan, South Korea by Jinduk Seo, Bonchon started as a beer-and-fried chicken bar. Interestingly, Seo's main focus was on perfecting his signature sauces, originally intending to sell the sauces rather than the chicken itself.

· Perfecting the Crunch: Bonchon popularized the double-frying method that defines its signature crunch—so thin and crackly it's been described as "glass-like". This 20-minute process also removes excess fat to create a less greasy, shatteringly crisp skin.

· Signature Sauce: Each crispy piece is hand-brushed with sauce, a laborious process that ensures a perfect coating. The recipe was created by founder Jinduk Seo, and the company says it's still made with the exact same formula from 2002.

· Global Expansion: Bonchon expanded rapidly, opening its first U.S. location in 2006. It has since grown to nearly 500 locations across 10 countries, with the U.S. generating over 60% of total revenue. The brand aims to double its presence by 2030.

Bonchon’s journey from a small Busan shop focused on sauce to a global fried chicken powerhouse is a remarkable success story.
