Day 1 at the AICI Asia Conference 2026 in Tokyo.

This year’s theme, “Spirit of Harmony: Shaping Futures Through Creativity and Inclusion,” really got me reflecting on how much the image consulting industry has evolved.

For many people outside the industry, image consulting may still sound like “helping people dress well.”

But those of us in this profession have been practising far beyond that.

It is also about psychology, behaviour, communication, leadership presence, inner confidence, wellbeing, emotional connection, and even life science. It is about helping people align who they are on the inside with how they show up on the outside.

The keynote speech by the Corporate Executive Officer of Shiseido, Mizuki Hashimoto, shared the evolution of “Stage, not age.”

Instead of defining people by age, we begin to see life in different stages of growth, creativity, contribution, and reinvention.

I found that deeply connected to the conference theme.

Creativity is seeing possibilities beyond labels.

Inclusion is recognising that every person, at every stage of life, still wants to feel seen, valued, confident, and relevant.

Really meaningful conversations and perspectives to kick off the conference.

"Today isn’t about dressing up, it’s about showing up," that was how Fumakilla CEO, Dato’ Brian Tan, opened Day 1 of our training.

He was joining us right after I had walked the participants through a session on perception and impact.

Humourously, he joked that he wasn't sure if the trainer said the same thing about showing up.:)

He went on to share how, at a key moment in his career, an opportunity came his way in the most unexpected way —just because he was spotted of his ability to influence in a group conversation. Such an inspiring story!

After his speech, I cheekily asked the participants, "What did we say this morning about showing up versus the other words?"

"Showing up vs showing off! Show up isn’t show off!" A HOD responded instantly.🙋‍♀️

Spontaneously, Dato’ Brian smiled and pretended to roll up his sleeve, showing his wrist, "If you intentionally show off your Rolex, that’s showing off."

Then he raised three fingers, signaling that if you deliberately highlight how many carats your ring has, that’s also showing off.

The room burst into laughter! 😆🤣

And just like that, we started Day 1 anchored in the right mindset.

Many Asians think showing up is showing off. That to some extend make a person behave overly humble.

Many people also think showing up is only about dressing well.

While appearance matters, it reflects your energy and who you are—true showing up goes deeper. It’s about presence, intention, and contribution.

Here’s the difference:

𝑺𝒉𝒐𝒘𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒐𝒇𝒇 is outward focus.
“Look at me. Notice me. Admire me.”

𝑺𝒉𝒐𝒘𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒖𝒑 is about being present.
“I’m here. I’m ready. I’m contributing.”
Focused inward and outward, creating real impact.

Day 2, we continue to practice showing up with graceful etiquette. We adopt one central principle: Making people feel seen, heard and valued.

I’m truly grateful to Dato’ Brian Tan and Ms Chan for being so supportive of this learning journey.

As the CEO said, even a small investment in personal development can lead to significant growth in professional development.

Ms Chan went a step further by partnering together to ensure the learning continues long after the class, driving real application and transformation.

【你的衣橱,藏着你的人生】

那一个下午,我陪一位学员整理她17年的衣橱。

一件一件拿起,再一件一件放下的,
不只是衣服,
还有那些曾经的身份、经历与故事。

有些,已经不再适合她的身形、颜色与性格;
有些,不再属于她现在的角色和要追逐的梦想;
有些,承载着她以为自己“应该成为”的样子。

当她慢慢放下,衣橱变轻的同时,我看到她的笑容也不再那么拘谨了。

有一幕,我带她搭配适合她气质的衣服。
看着镜子里的自己,她沉默几秒后 ~

“为什么……我觉得自己丑?”

她皱起眉头。

“你还没能完全接纳你自己吧。” 我说。

她失声大哭。

接着,她说,从小妹妹妒忌她,为了被认可,
她拼命把不适合自己的衣服套在身上,让自己变丑。

她边说边抽泣。我容许她走进自己的情绪。

“你看到我脸上的阴影吗?” 她说。

“你看到你阴影之外的自己,是一个美丽的女人。” 我说。

片刻后,她对着镜子轻声说:
“我容许你,做回你自己。”

她收拾心情,坚定地告诉自己,也轻轻地笑了。

那一刻,我知道,
被整理的,从来不只是衣橱,
而是一个人的人生。

Style without self-awareness is just decoration.

You can wear the right colours.
Say the right words.
Carry the right title.

But executive presence? It’s never built from the outside in.

It comes from alignment.

It starts when who you are inside
matches how you show up outside.

I learned this from my own journey.

For two decades, I quietly navigated identity questions.

Five feet tall.
Often the smallest in the room.
Chinese-educated.
Once doubting my English.

On the outside, I looked fine.
Inside, I carried self-doubt, low confidence, and an internalised inferiority complex.

No amount of style could fix that.

What changed everything was becoming truly aware of my identity.

I started confronting my own iceberg —
the hidden beliefs, emotional triggers, and quiet fears shaping how I spoke, decided, and led.

From follower to leader, I rebuilt my presence, my voice, and my conviction.
Serving as President of three professional, business, and community bodies was transformative.

My career has taken many turns:
court reporter → news and business journalist → US youth camp instructor → translator → beauty trainer → image consultant → executive coach → founder of Beyond Image Global.

Each reinvention taught me the same thing:
alignment comes before elevation.

Today, this is what I help leaders do.

Because executive presence isn’t about being the loudest in the room.
It’s about being anchored in who you are.

That is why I do this work.
I am Jade. As an image consultant and coach, I help leaders align who they are with how they show up so they step into their full potential.

Executive presence evolves at every stage of your career, and the challenges are arriving earlier than ever.

So, 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗲𝘅𝗲𝗰𝘂𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲?

It’s the mix of qualities, behaviors, and mindset that makes others confident in your leadership — before you even speak or hold a title.

As a professional, you need it to influence and lead effectively.

Here’s what I’ve noticed:

What used to happen in our 40s → now starts in our mid-30s
What used to happen in our 50s → now starts in our 40s

𝗪𝗵𝘆?
• Promotions happen earlier
• Skills expire faster
• Organisations are flatter
• AI reshapes roles constantly

Career stages are no longer age-based.
They’re responsibility-based.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆, and what executive presence looks like at each stage:

Early 20s → Do I belong? (Credibility)
Late 20s / Early 30s → Am I seen? (Visibility)
Mid 30s → Can I lead others? (Influence)
Mid 40s → How do I stay relevant? (Reinvention)

These aren’t just career challenges.
They are identity challenges.

You’re being asked to act like a leader before you fully feel like one.
Your executive presence is only authentic when your internal identity with the leadership role you’re stepping into.

I’m a strong advocate of self-leadership.
The world is always changing. Only by being agile can you navigate it effectively.

𝗘𝘅𝗲𝗰𝘂𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳-𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽:

• Manage your mindset before managing people
• Own your voice before owning a title
• Adapt before change forces you to
• Reinvent before relevance fades

By mastering yourself first, you naturally project the confidence, clarity, and influence that define executive presence — even before a title or position validates it.

Executive presence has moved beyond visibility. is now its currency.

What if your International Women’s Day could spark courage, confidence and transformation?

We often talk about during IWD.

To me, empowerment takes many shapes. Sometimes it begins with the courage to try something new, and the opportunity to explore new possibilities.

It can be as simple as…

Women trying colours they never dared to wear.
Women seeing themselves differently in the mirror.
Women giving themselves to be seen.

And men showing up as allies —
learning, supporting and growing alongside them.

Confidence requires us to challenge the status quo.
Sometimes it starts with something small… like colour, style, or the to try.

And from there, something deeper happens:
clarity grows
self-trust grows
voice grows

This is why the work I do will always be about more than appearance.
It is about helping people step into presence, confidence and self-leadership.

Here’s to the women who rise, and the allies who rise with them. 💜

给正在寻找事业方向的朋友们:

我理解,在人生的 transition period 里,人会很迷茫,甚至会失了方寸,已经认不清,来到前面的机会是否noise,还是跟你心中的voice相契合的。

在我的职业生涯里,我也曾多次方寸大乱,甚至有过完全躺平、很颓废的阶段。

但正是因为愿意拥抱自己的不安全感、不断去体验,我才慢慢找到真正契合内心、也能发挥自己强项的事业——

从记者,到美国夏令营美术指导;从企业翻译员,到美容讲师;再到现在,把形象管理和内在领导力教练结合在一起。

一路走来,我最大的体会是:

不要太计算得失。
当下觉得想尝试什么,就去试。
你会在一次次尝试中,找到人生使命的蛛丝马迹。
这个过程充满不确定,但当你敢去拥抱它,因不确定而产生的焦虑会慢慢消散。

因为不确定,最终会变成像吃饭、喝咖啡一样的日常。

如果你正处在探索期,不妨找个安静的时间——拿出笔和纸,冲一杯咖啡☕,给自己一到两个小时,写下:

1️⃣ 过去有哪些事情让你很有成就感,而且做起来并不费力?
这些事情往往透露了 what sparks joy,也透露了你的天赋与强项。

2️⃣ 列出你的10个核心价值,再慢慢缩减成3–5个。
例如我的核心价值是:Growth、Passion、Heart、Respect、Alignment。(refer comment for core values)

它们像人生的导航,让我做的每一个决定,都与之对齐。

最近遇到不少30+、40+站在人生分水岭的学员朋友们,所以想写下这一段。

2026刚开始,也许这能给你一个新的探索方向。

与其想很多一年一年过去,
不如,
此刻想做什么,就去做。
时间到了需要转弯,就转弯。
反正,人生本来就是一场旅行。

你若总站在岸边计算得失,或许不会掉进水里,但也看不到远方的风景。除非你愿意让生命留白。
