"Information is power." Universal access to information means everyone has a right to seek, receive and impart information, to help us make informed decisions. Freedom of Information (FOI) is crucial for transparency and good governance.

In Malaysia, more and more are voicing concerns about the limitations on access to information, notably the Official Secrets Act 1972 (OSA). Many groups are working to educate the public on the importance of free-flowing information for an accountable and corruption-free government. The absence of a specific national law on FOI inspires a push for an FOI law in Malaysia.

Access to information champions press freedom and its power to report on any matter that the public has the right to know. This right is vital in the PR world as FOI is the prerequisite to sending out the right messages.

In conjunction with the United Nations' International Day for Universal Access to Information which is observed on 28 September, let’s all play our part in pushing for FOI. For example, when campaigning starts, we should ask our MP candidates where they stand on the matter. Transparency through freedom of information is necessary for a truly democratic state.

We all know how incredible social media can be, with its ability to share information across the globe, in mere milliseconds. With platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, YouTube, TikTok and more, it should come as no surprise then that as of 2021 there are over 4.48 billion social media users in the world. To show just how powerful social media has become, we’ve put together a little infographic for your read.

If you’re trying to get your message across to a mass audience, chances are social media is the best way to do it. For PR, social media has not only opened doors to more opportunities and possibilities, but challenges too. Words have the power to calm and inspire, to oppress or liberate, to heal or to destroy. Take for example some of the most powerful speeches, like Martin Luther King's 'I Have A Dream' or Nelson Mandela's 'I Am Prepared To Die'. Words can influence the perspective of millions, and as we've seen with less favourable examples throughout history, it can also shift the wrong way.

In recent years, hate speech continues to be on the rise, inciting violence and bigotry. In an effort to fight this, for the first time ever, the United Nations is declaring today, the International Day for Countering Hate Speech.

In the words of UN Secretary-General António Guterres, “Hatred is a danger to everyone – and so fighting it must be a job for everyone”. Words have the power to change the world, so today we claim and urge everyone to work together, to combat the global phenomenon of hate speech.

In conjunction with World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development (21 May), BWM hosted a webinar highlighting “Sarawak’s Exotic Food Heritage” on 19 May. All this talk about food! …. So this weekend, let’s all embrace Malaysia's multiculturalism (and love for food) and go out and try some delicious Sarawakian dishes.

After all, celebrating cultural diversity could be as simple as appreciating food of other cultures.
