𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐈 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐚 𝐜𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐝𝐞𝐝 𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐭?
One question I often hear is, "How can I stand out in a crowded market?" It's a great question because, in the past, businesses were set apart by geography. If you were the only butcher, baker, or candlestick maker in your area, that was enough. But today, in the digital world, every business is just a few clicks away, making it much harder to stand out.
Everyone in your industry is saying similar things, so it’s tough to be unique. But I’ve learned a few things about how to stand out, and I want to share them with you so you can attract more customers and get noticed.
First, let's understand how the human brain works. Our brains have a gatekeeper called the limbic system, which filters out most of the information around us. This filter helps us ignore the constant stream of messages we receive daily.
Imagine walking down a busy city street—you see lots of people, but by the end of your walk, you probably don't remember any of them. That’s your brain filtering out unnecessary information. The same thing happens in the marketplace; your customers are filtering out most of what they see, including your business. So, how do you break through this filter?
Research shows that five things can get through this filter:
1. Scary: Our brains are wired to notice anything threatening. That’s why news outlets often focus on scary stories. But for most businesses, being scary isn't the best approach.
2. Strange: Weird or unusual things grab our attention, like those inflatable tube men you see outside car dealerships. While strange can work, it’s not a fit for every business.
3. Sexy: Attractive things catch our eye. However, most businesses don’t want to—or can’t—rely on s*x appeal.
4. Free Stuff: Everyone loves free things. When you offer valuable information, content, or samples for free, people pay attention. Packaging matters here—make sure your free offerings are presented nicely, just like a well-wrapped gift.
5. Familiarity: The more someone sees you or interacts with your brand, the more familiar you become. This familiarity makes people more likely to notice you. Research shows that spending around 7 hours with someone or having 11 positive interactions can build trust. We call this the "7-Eleven rule."
To apply this rule, make sure you have enough content—like videos, podcasts, reports, and articles—so people can spend time getting to know you. This helps build familiarity and trust, making it easier for your business to stand out.
