Don't be surprised when I say that there are still many companies that don't have a proper Marketing Dept. They have Sales, Corporate Comm., IT, Operations, R&D, HR, Finance and all but not Marketing.
When there is no progress or growth, be it in revenue, profit, cash flow, market share and brand reputation, the easy target is the Sales team. The management team will screw those poor sales guys over and over again hoping to turn the situation around.
But after so many years of screwing and replacing the 'non-performers' with the new ones, and there is still small or zero traction on growth, then only those people at the top realise that what they need is actually a proper Marketing team and a proper marketing strategy.
