Kuala Lumpur has turtles! Who knew!

I found this little spiny hill turtle (heosemys spinosa) while hiking one day in Bukit Kiara, and after doing some research, found out quite a bit about it.

They are known by their name for their sharp spikes, what can protect them against predators. These turtles typically lay one egg at a time, sometimes up to a maximum of three.

But they are under threat from poaching for the pet trade, and destruction of their natural habitat.

Preserving animals like the spiny hill turtle in its natural habitat is an action in line with Sustainable Development Goal 15: Life on Land.

Would you take care of a river?

Would you do it alone?

Most people wouldn't. But one man, Mazelan Jamaludin, has been doing this for more than 30 years.

A resident of Malaysia's Taman Melawati, just outside Kuala Lumpur, Mazelan has been maintaining the Klang River (Sungai Klang) near its source since the late 80s.

By maintaining, we mean:
• removing rubbish
• planting flowers and vegetation
• clearing weeds and bushes
• building bunds to strengthen the river
• educating visitors about the environment

Protecting water sources like rivers is an action in line with the UN's Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG6).

Malaya's first nature influencer was a big game hunter.

Did you know that the father of modern conservation in Malaysia not only liked to hunt elephants and seladang, but also wrote a book about it?

Long before Malaysia had conservation groups and activists fighting to protect Malaysia's environment, one man - Theodore Hubback - decided to campaign to save Malaysia's wildlife.

And he got so good at it, he laid the building blocks for Taman Negara, Malaysia's still largest protected rainforest.

Can you recycle rubber?

And do it in such a way where it's still strong and cheaper to source than raw rubber?

POV: You meet the men who made their own river.

David Lok and Mr Moo are restoring a degraded Malaysian forest by planting new native trees.

While doing so, they came across a flooded pond on the edge of their forest, and made a small drain for the water from the pond to flow.

Today, that water has become a small river that helps nourishes the trees they planted.

This is the third video in the Reforesting Sungai Buaya series.

Restoring your own forest is an action in line with the UN's Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 15: Life on Land.

Alicia Tien Weei is the founder of Asia Discovery, a firm with a goal to advance Southeast Asia's energy transition through social development and renewable energies.

A young Malaysian Gen-Z, she has been working hard to bring in EV technology to her country, and believes that the time is now for the transition away from fossil fuels to clean, green energy.

How are these two men protecting a forest?

By planting rare, endangered trees!

David Lok and Moo F**k Yow from "Reforesting Sungai Buaya" are restoring the degraded Rantau Panjang forest near Rawang, Malaysia.

One of the trees they're planting is merawan kanching, a species with only 400 left in Malaysia.

They planted about 100 more on this 50-acre land, along with hundreds of other endangered trees, and thousands of other saplings.

Restoring your own forest is an action in line with the UN's Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 15: Life on Land.

The two men say that by planting endangered trees, people would be reluctant to cut the forest down.
