A large part of the restoration work at The Landing sits in the timber details; the windows, frames, and smaller structural elements that define how the building is experienced up close.

Many of these components are not simply repaired but are carefully remade using custom profiles based on the original designs. It is a process that demands patience, passion, and a deep respect for the character of the building itself.

Working back from what once existed, local artisans carefully match proportions, rebuild details, and shape each piece so it settles naturally within the structure, both visually and structurally. Every element is measured, crafted, adjusted, and refined by hand on site.

It is slow, deliberate work, driven by skill and pride in craftsmanship. Much of this effort may never immediately stand out, but it is exactly these details that will make The Landing feel authentic, timeless, and truly special.
Projects like these are only possible through the dedication of talented local craftsmen whose work deserves to be celebrated.

Working on a site like this, you occasionally uncover small reminders of the lives and activity that came before.
During excavation and restoration, a number of old items were found on site, including bottles, pieces of railway material, and fragments linked to earlier construction methods.
Some of these findings will be kept and thoughtfully incorporated into the project as part of the wider story of the site.
At this stage, the intention is not to overstate their significance, but rather to acknowledge them for what they are:
Real traces of the history that has shaped this place over time.

As the project develops further, selected items will be displayed or worked into the final experience in a way that feels appropriate to the building, the site, and its heritage.
This process has been a reminder that restoration is not only about what is rebuilt, but also about what is uncovered along the way.

The jetty marks an important chapter in Swakopmund’s history. Built at a time when landing on this coastline was difficult and unpredictable, it became a vital point of connection between ocean and land.
Before reliable roads and railways linked the town to the interior, steamships anchored offshore while goods, passengers, and supplies were ferried through the surf to this narrow wooden structure stretching into the Atlantic. In this way, the jetty formed part of the infrastructure that supported the early growth and movement of people and goods in the town.
Today, as a landmark and symbol of arrival, it inspires a new place of gathering and connection.
The Landing, where journeys meet the shore.

This land once quenched the thirst of oxen before they hauled bricks and supplies inland
- a resting place then, a destination now.

Long before tar roads and trucks, this corner of Swakopmund was a working pause in a much longer journey. Ox-wagons would roll in from the surf line, animals led to the well to drink before the heavy pull inland began - loaded with bricks, timber and supplies for a growing colony.
Teamsters rested in the shade, checked wheels and ropes, and watched the ocean for the next small boat to land.

The Landing takes its name from that original moment of arrival - honouring the people, boats and brave crossings that turned an empty shoreline into a harbour of possibility.

In the early 1900s, this stretch of coastline was Swakopmund’s first point of arrival - where small boats fought the surf, off-loaded passengers and cargo, and the town’s earliest stories began.

Ox-wagons waited in the sand, traders and travellers stepped ashore, and a new life in the desert started right here.
