CBN directs banks to start paying new naira notes over the counter — N20k maximum

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has directed commercial banks to start paying the redesigned naira notes to customers over the counter.

In a statement on Thursday, the CBN said the new directive was to alleviate the challenges that Nigerians are experiencing with getting access to the new notes, as well as reduce queues at the automated teller machines (ATMs) nationwide.

The latest development comes across as one of the several reversals made by CBN since it announced the naira redesign policy in October last year.

Following the unveiling and the commencement of the circulation of the redesigned naira notes on December 15, 2022, the apex bank ordered deposit money banks (DMBs) to stop issuing the new notes over the counter.

Microsoft confirms it’s investing billions in the creator of ChatGPT

Microsoft on Monday confirmed it is making a “multibillion dollar” investment in OpenAI, the company behind the viral new AI chatbot tool called ChatGPT.

Microsoft, an early investor in OpenAI, said it plans to expand its existing partnership with the company as part of a greater effort to add more artificial intelligence to its suite of products. In a separate blog post, OpenAI said the multi-year investment will be used to “develop AI that is increasingly safe, useful, and powerful.”

“We formed our partnership with OpenAI around a shared ambition to responsibly advance cutting-edge AI research and democratize AI as a new technology platform,” Satya Nadella, Microsoft’s CEO, said in a statement.

The deepening partnership between the two companies has the potential to supercharge OpenAI’s ambitious projects, including ChatGPT, which has captured the attention of – and sometimes sparked concerns from – academics, business leaders and tech enthusiasts with its ability to create provide lengthy and thorough responses to user prompts and questions.

The investment could also catapult Microsoft as an AI leader and ultimately pave the way for the company to incorporate ChatGPT into some of its hallmark applications, such as Word, PowerPoint and Outlook.

As a result of its existing exclusive deal with OpenAI, Microsoft recently said it would soon add ChatGPT features to to its cloud computing service, Azure. If ChatGPT becomes available on that service, businesses could use the tools directly within its apps and services, too.

The investment comes days after Microsoft announced plans to lay off 10,000 employees as part of broader cost-cutting measures. Nadella said at the time that the company will continue to invest in “strategic areas for our future” and pointed to advances in AI as “the next major wave” of computing.

College to train over 100,000 Nigerians on political literacy by 2027

The Electoral College Nigeria, a non-governmental organisation based in Abuja is set to train over 100,000 people on political literacy by the end of 2027.

This was contained in a statement on Friday signed by Kunle Lawal, Executive Director, Electoral College Nigeria.

Lawal said the college had performed remarkably since its inception in 2019 despite its limited resources and no grants.

“The journey to Political literacy and massive political participation is far from over and there is a need to capitalize on the college’s operations through extended partnerships to achieve a wider and more impactful reach.

“With droplets of resources from friends of the college and the board, the college in 2020 till date has trained over 9,000 people virtually and physically and would be working towards training over 100,000 by the End of 2023.

“A politically literate citizen not only comprehends the current state of governance, but also participates in an active and effective way and directs it,” the state read in part.
