The Federal Government of Nigeria has challenged the Dangote Group to accelerate its sugar production efforts, setting an ambitious target of 600,000 metric tonnes (MT) per annum by 2030.

This mandate is part of the government’s National Sugar Master Plan (NSMP) aimed at achieving self-sufficiency and reducing the nation’s dependence on imported raw sugar.

- Strategic Expansion: To meet this goal, Dangote Sugar Refinery is significantly expanding its backward integration projects at Numan, Adamawa State, and Tunga, Nasarawa State.

These sites are focused on large-scale sugarcane cultivation and the installation of modern processing facilities to convert cane into refined sugar locally.

-Reducing Imports: Nigeria currently spends millions of dollars annually on sugar imports.

Achieving the 600,000MT milestone would drastically cut foreign exchange expenditure and protect the local economy from global price fluctuations.

-Job Creation and Rural Development: The expansion of these sugar estates is expected to create thousands of direct and indirect jobs in host communities.

The Federal Government highlighted that the success of the sugar master plan is critical for rural industrialization and poverty alleviation in the North-East and North-Central regions.

-Government Support: High-level officials emphasized that the government remains committed to providing the necessary infrastructure, security, and policy incentives to support indigenous players like Dangote in overcoming operational hurdles and meeting the 2030 timeline.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited has significantly increased its commitment to the Dangote Petroleum Refinery, doubling its scheduled crude oil supply to 10 cargoes for the month of May.

This move is aimed at ramping up the refinery's production capacity to meet domestic fuel demands and reduce reliance on imports.

- Supply Ramp-Up: This latest allocation follows a consistent increase in feedstock, moving from six cargoes in previous months to the current ten.

This ensures the 650,000 barrels-per-day facility has the necessary input to sustain its operations as it begins to roll out diesel and aviation fuel to the Nigerian market.

- Local Refining Impact: The increased supply is a strategic step toward ensuring energy self-sufficiency for Nigeria.

By processing crude locally, the country aims to save billions in foreign exchange and stabilize the prices of petroleum products at the pump.

- Strategic Partnership: Industry analysts view the NNPC's aggressive supply schedule as a signal of a deepening partnership between the state-owned oil firm and the private refinery.

This collaboration is critical for the successful deregulation of the downstream sector and the overall health of the Nigerian economy.

- Operational Status: With the steady arrival of these cargoes, the Dangote Refinery is expected to further optimize its primary distillation units.

This progress brings the facility closer to its goal of producing high-quality Euro-V standard fuels for both the local and international markets.
