The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Muhammad Ali Pate, today received the WHO Country Representative, Pavel Ursu, who presented the WHO Nigeria Programme Budget Workplan for 2026–2027. During the meeting, Prof. Pate reaffirmed the World Health Organization’s commitment to supporting the Nigeria Health Sector Reform and Investment Initiative (NHSRII) while ensuring alignment with the Sector-Wide Approach (SWAp).

The 2026–2027 workplan, fully aligned with the Country Cooperation Strategy (2023–2027) and GPW14, establishes a results-driven framework designed to deliver measurable impact across key priority areas. These include primary health care and Universal Health Coverage (UHC), routine immunization and the polio transition programme, health security and IHR 7-1-7 capacity, equity and quality of healthcare services, as well as the strengthening of digital health systems.
The framework further reinforces alignment with national health priorities, alongside a commitment to provide quarterly updates on implementation progress and outcomes.

Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate commended the WHO for its transparency and sustained engagement regarding planned programme delivery, noting that the approach grants the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare full visibility, ownership, and accountability over WHO’s contributions to Nigeria’s health sector.

Discussions also focused on Nigeria’s participation in the 79th World Health Assembly, the WHO’s strategic shift toward stronger subnational delivery in response to evolving resource realities, and preparations for the 5th High-Level Ministerial Meeting on Antimicrobial Resistance, scheduled for 29–30 June 2026 in Abuja.

Together, the WHO and the Government of Nigeria continue to advance a shared agenda aimed at delivering measurable results, strengthening health systems, and building a resilient and equitable healthcare sector that leaves no one behind.

Dear, Musa Azare.

The level of theatrics in your write-up is too high and the level of substance is very low. This is typical revisionism when facts become uncomfortable and the best way to manage the problem is to turn up the drama.

To start with, your fixation with votes is a sign of either naivety or dishonesty. In politics, the number of votes cast does not just come out of the air, they are people, opinions and structures which have come together under certain circumstances. For you to trivialize all of that, it means you have no business talking about politics. You don't even speak for yourself.

Your attempt to glorify your "foot soldier" status as an important participant in the 2019 presidential election campaign is laughable. Nigerian electoral victories do not belong to one or two people in situation rooms but to millions of Nigerians. Participation in politics doesn't make you a leader or a winner, let alone hero.

Your question “where were you?” shows how irrelevant and naive you sound. Leadership isn't about where you were at some point in the past, it's about who you are now and what you can do today. You are trying to legitimize your relevance based on one person's personal story?

Your suggestion that one individual is the “architect of all party crises” is extremely reckless. No party or country has problems caused by one individual but by multiple systemic failures and structural weaknesses. To suggest otherwise only serves your own interest.

It doesn't really matter whether you are calling Pate a good doctor or trying to refer to a “bull in a china shop.” Such references show that you don't have anything meaningful to say and have resorted to personal insults.

You are using some clichés like "spent horses" to try and add weight to your arguments. However, this only shows the desperation you are in and proves my point that you have lost the thread of discussion.

What we can see here is an effort to "anoint" some aspirants while delegitimizing others. What kind of democracy is this? You are accusing Pate of playing politics while engaging in politics yourself. How hypocritical!

If we want to continue with political discussion, we must be honest with each other and discuss issues objectively.

‎A Statesman’s Sacrifice - The Selfless Service of Professor Muhammad Ali Pate.

‎ By: M.Y Lamido Misau
‎ (Scribe Pate Media Center)

‎In the ever-evolving landscape of Nigerian politics, moments arise that test not only ambition but also character, loyalty, and commitment to national service. One such defining moment has recently emerged in the political journey of Muhammad Ali Pate, a man widely respected for his intellect, competence, and unwavering dedication to public service.

‎For many in Bauchi State, Professor Pate represented more than just a political aspirant; he embodied hope, capacity, and a promise of purposeful leadership.

‎His decision to express interest in the governorship race was met with overwhelming enthusiasm from a broad spectrum of society, youths, elders, professionals, and political stakeholders alike. This groundswell of support was not accidental.

‎It was rooted in his proven track record, both nationally and internationally, and his remarkable contributions to human development, particularly in the health sector.

‎However, leadership is often defined not by the positions one seeks, but by the sacrifices one is willing to make for the greater good.

‎In a surprising yet deeply significant turn of events, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu made the strategic decision to retain Professor Pate in his role as Minister of Health and Social Welfare.

‎This was not merely a political calculation, but a recognition of the critical role Pate plays in reshaping Nigeria’s healthcare system. At a time when the nation faces complex health challenges, continuity, expertise, and visionary leadership are indispensable, and Professor Pate represents all three.

‎For his supporters, the news may have come as a moment of disappointment. Aspirations were high, expectations even higher. Yet, within this development lies a deeper narrative, one of sacrifice, patriotism, and selfless service.

‎Professor Pate’s decision to step back from the governorship race is not a retreat, but a redirection of purpose. It is a powerful reminder that true leadership is not confined to a single office or title. Rather, it is reflected in the impact one makes, the lives one touches, and the legacy one builds.

‎By choosing to remain in his ministerial role, Pate has once again demonstrated his commitment to national development over personal ambition.

‎His work in strengthening Nigeria’s healthcare infrastructure, improving access to quality medical services, and driving reforms that prioritise the well-being of citizens continues to earn him recognition both at home and abroad.

‎Indeed, the health sector remains one of the most critical pillars of any nation’s development. A healthier population is a more productive population, and under Pate’s stewardship, significant strides have been made towards achieving this goal. From policy reforms to strategic partnerships, his contributions are helping to reposition Nigeria’s healthcare system for long-term sustainability.

‎For the good people of Bauchi State, this moment calls for reflection rather than frustration. While the governorship ambition may have been deferred, the essence of leadership that Pate represents remains very much alive.

His influence, vision, and commitment to development are not diminished, they are simply being applied on a broader, national scale.

‎Moreover, this development presents an opportunity for unity. Political processes will continue, new candidates will emerge, and the democratic journey will move forward. However, the shared goal of progress, peace, and prosperity for Bauchi State must remain paramount.

‎Supporters of Professor Pate can take pride in the fact that their leader is not only capable but also trusted at the highest levels of governance. Being retained in such a critical national role is, in itself, a testament to his value, credibility, and effectiveness.

‎In times like this, emotions may run high, but wisdom demands calmness, understanding, and a broader perspective. The path to development is not always linear, and sometimes, the greatest contributions are made behind the scenes, away from the spotlight of electoral politics.

‎Professor Muhammad Ali Pate’s story, in this context, becomes one of inspiration. It is a lesson in humility, a demonstration of loyalty, and a powerful example of service above self.

‎His journey reminds us that leadership is not about personal gain, but about collective progress.

‎As Bauchi State continues its political journey towards 2027, one thing remains certain: the ideals of good governance, accountability, and development, values that Pate represents, will continue to guide the aspirations of its people.

‎In the end, history does not only remember those who sought power, but more importantly, those who used their positions to serve humanity with sincerity and dedication.

‎Professor Pate has chosen service.

‎And in that choice lies true greatness.

Prof. Mohammed Ali Pate: A Statesman’s Choice Above Self

By Adamu Aliyu Sarma

In a political era often defined by intense competition and personal ambition, the decision of stands out as a rare demonstration of patriotism, restraint, and statesmanship.

Appointed in 2023 by President as the Federal Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Pate’s return to national service was not by chance, but by proven merit. His earlier tenure as Minister of State for Health under President earned him recognition for competence, innovation, and results-driven leadership. With a wealth of experience from global institutions, including the and other multinational bodies, he brought both depth and global perspective into Nigeria’s health sector.

From the very moment he resumed office, Prof. Pate demonstrated uncommon dedication, working tirelessly to strengthen Nigeria’s healthcare system and align it with international best practices. His performance quickly exceeded expectations, reaffirming the confidence reposed in him by the President and the Nigerian people.

It was therefore not surprising that his home state, Bauchi, began to look toward him as a beacon of hope for leadership ahead of the 2027 gubernatorial elections. Calls from citizens—youths and elders alike—grew louder, urging him to step forward and contest. Responding to the overwhelming support, he showed willingness to serve once again, this time at the state level.

However, as the political climate intensified and the contest gradually assumed a “do-or-die” posture, Prof. Pate made a decision that has since resonated across the nation. After consultations, including with President Tinubu, he chose to step aside from the gubernatorial race. His reason was clear and profound: to reduce political tension, preserve peace, and remain focused on his critical national assignment.

This decision, though met initially with disappointment by his teeming supporters, has since been widely applauded. It reflects not weakness, but strength of character. Not retreat, but responsibility. In choosing national interest over personal ambition, Prof. Pate has set a powerful example for both emerging and established politicians.

At a time when many would cling to political aspirations at all costs, he has reminded us that leadership is not merely about holding office, but about knowing when to step back for the greater good. His action teaches that peace, integrity, and service to the nation must always come before personal gain.

Today, Nigerians—especially the good people of Bauchi State—express deep appreciation for his courage and maturity. His decision is seen not as an end, but as a mark of higher calling and future possibilities. Indeed, many have reaffirmed their unwavering support for him, assuring that whenever and wherever he chooses to serve, he will not stand alone.

Prof. Mohammed Ali Pate has, through this singular act, written his name in the annals of responsible leadership. He has shown that true greatness lies not just in rising, but in rising above self.

Nigeria salutes you.
