YOUR DEGREE'S SKILL IS NOT ENOUGH! Take it from John Obidi ...

Dear reader,

The time is 10:16 am and I'm writing this to you, while seated inside Dr Suleiman Kumo conference hall of ABU Hotels
..and I'm thinking

Isn't it unfair that we spend years schooling, only to graduate into the unemployment line?

Well, If you're like me who doesn't think it is, you might want to read on to see the strategy an average John used to break free, and even out of Nigeria

But before that, here's the background to his story

Now, If you have/are studying for a first degree in Nigeria, you're expected to possess a skill that is peculiar to your degree...

If it's an professional degree like Accounting or Medical degree, you're expected to have accounting or medical skills as the case may be...

Or a non-professional degree like mathematics? well, mathematical skills...you get the gist

However, seeing that the world has become a global village with virtually everything becoming "digital", such that we now have virtual classrooms, court sessions, seminars, etc, the question is...

Will these degrees' skills be all you need to not be left out in this new world?

I mean let's face it..how many have even succeeded with those skills in the physical world, much less in the digital world?

And you might ask...
.. what if my degree is one that entails a form of digital awareness, like computer science or computer engineering and the likes?

Well, this is part where I tell you John's story

It all started before 2011

John was a Computer Science graduate who was opportuned to have web design, programming and other tech skills.

You see, to everyone It seemed that John would easily take his place in the lucrative world of tech, since he studied a "digital course" so to say...

But this wasn't the case...

The first photo is of John in 2012/2013, while the second is more recent...

In 2012, John was badly underemployed with a 20k/month job.

And for a young graduate, getting such pitiable jobs was next to impossible because:

✓there were already many people with his degree but few jobs
✓his location then, had few people who valued his skills and
✓his degree's skills alone couldn't get him to people and places who needed and were ready to pay large sums for his skills

And what's worse, John had big dreams but no "connections".
..and he knew his job couldn't fund his dreams.

Fast forward to 2013.
He was fed up and accidentally, he stumbled upon Social Media Strategy.

To cut a long story short, John spent the next 9months learning, practicing and teaching all he could find on Social Media Strategy and from there,
..well the rest, they say is history.

John went on to make his first million be nominated for The Future Awards Africa Prize for New Media in 2013 which he later won in 2018.

And today, he has...
✓traveled to over 7 countries
✓relocated to Dubai
✓ and no longer needs to suffer the pain of teaching web design or programming to earn a living!
..all from 9 months of upskilling.
✓with a job to attend to
✓without much money to bank on
✓and with few people who shared or support his dream

Now don't get me wrong I'm not saying university education is worthless...

Infact quite the opposite as it would've been almost impossible if he had no degree...

Neither am I saying we should ditch education and start chasing money... nope, far from that...

What I'm really pointing at is, John was able to enjoy the MOST benefit of his degree's skill, when he found a way to sell it and himself, on Social media!

Safe to say He found his place on the internet..

Why? because he learnt the skill to achieve this!

Drink up fam!
I know this is a lot to take in ..but this might be the wake-up call you need to start taking Social Media and digital skills seriously
..or ignore and continue on a journey into unemployment.

Write to you soon
Love,
Egya

PS: Social Media Strategy is actually a combination of many skills actually...one of which is Copywriting.

John Obidi was able to identify those relevant to him and started from there

Is Copywriting the Social Media Strategy skill for you?

Well I can't say but why don't you go ahead and find out here: dolapohamzat.com/lmg

A law student, who is supposed to be focused on his studies, is dividing his time and attention for some digital skill called Copywriting?...🤔
.. limited time which he's supposed to be using to read his books and hone his legal skills?😱

Well, this is the height of misplaced priorities...😰

Or so I thought...
untill I realized that Balogun Sofiyullah, Abdulrauf Abdullahi, Diekolola, Kehinde Emmanuel, etc are also gurus at the online skill of Content Creation...

But that's not even all...

It appears they're creating legal content consciously, but subconsciously mastering the skill which has brought them stardom without them even knowing!

But how have I come to realize this, You ask?
Well, the real question is...
Do you want to continue running after them from seminar to seminar asking how they started their online legal journey that made them known in almost all the law faculties in Nigeria?

...Or..Or you want to know the easy step-by-step process that could have saved them a whole lot of the stress they went through, because they weren't shown the easy path to follow?

The choice is yours...
Stay tuned for what is to come, or take the long, hard, windy road!

PS:
To the non-law student seeing this... You're not left out!
This might be what you need to position yourself on the internet/digital world, as an authority.. over even those courses mates who are better than you.

Why? Cuz the best who is known, will always earn more that the best who's unknown.
The world is speedily going digital...what are you waiting for?

Have you noticed that when you ask most Copy/Content writers to tell you the difference between Copywriting and Content writing, then end up telling you the difference between "Direct response" Copywriting and Content writing*?

*"...wouldn't it be unfair of me to keep it from those of you(or us internet users) suffering from Internet Addiction Disorder (IAD)?"*

Let me start by first apologizing to you for whatever this is before you even start reading..(myself I'm still trying to figure if it's just content like a rant or a copy)

That said,

I've come to realize that I enjoy shaking tables that even myself sit at...

(and heaven knows you're part guilty because you keep on encouraging me with your presence here daily, meaning you also enjoy it, Lol)

Okay so let's shake one more, shall we?

Now, if there's one reason I know why most of you come online daily,
it's because of the sweet pleasure you get from spying on the lives of people through their status and posts, from the comfort of your beds
..Yunno the joy of seeing what's going on in their lives like what movie or meme they're currently talking about, or what cruise they're currently catching (e.g Ellu p, lol, rings a bell?)

Well, as funny as it seems, you and I know this is true because just like you, I come online for similar reasons😁

Okay, maybe I'm just being cynical.

Cynical..what a word, right?!
Frankly, I've never really known the meaning of the word until I used it there and had to check if it's correct. And guess what? it's the perfect match....

Alas I digress!

But anyway back to the issue on ground or table rather

It might very well be because of the ease of checking up on your friends and loved ones, without having to leave your home...

However for me, I have to confess that one major reason I come online is to daydream on the status of people who are living my dream😍

And I'm 85% sure it's the same with you
..ogling and daydreaming on the status of people who are living your dream or flexing something you're obsessed with.

And maybe your obsession/dream could be Faith, or fancy cars, or latest fashion, or filthy riches, or knowledge, or a skill.

(and after feasting on the status then getting depressed and calling it oppression, right? Lol, I'm being cynical again right? I apologize)

I'm shaking this table this hard because I'm also at it. And in my case, my eyes are on something that's inevitable to my dream career, is fun, therapeutic, allows me to drown myself in the oceans of knowledge, and can also bring in cool cash💰!!!

And do you know what's more, unlike most, this my vanity was made to be fun by the internet because I need to be current online (meaning I get to learn from, and don't miss out on the cruise), and easily tap quality experience from different interesting personalities...

One of my favourite which is the perfect mix of brilliance, dexterity, and pure Lagos agbero vibes, in the person of Damilare Aribisala

I make sure to come online almost *every single day*, because I get to learn more than one new thing daily from him and his likes here on whatsapp...

But why am I sharing this with you, you wonder?

Well, wouldn't it be unfair of me to keep it from those of you suffering from Internet Addiction Disorder (IAD)?
when you could be catching all the fun, learning and also being pushed to work?

And did I forget to mention I love the Yoruba language...(especially their exclamations) and he's Yoruba.

So for me it's a perfect mix of learning and enjoying Yoruba cruise straight from someone who's knowledge of Copywriting has opened doors to other facets of (business) life.

Now, don't get me wrong
I'm not saying you should go and start learning Copywriting from him, but all I'm saying is just message him, get to save each others contacts and have beneficial fun!🥂

So here's the link to his WhatsApp DM: https://wa.link/xp3za6

Let me stop here and head to take my dinner cruise from his status before going to bed.

I'm rooting for you, fam
(Yes, even you the anonymous viewer of this status)

I'll attach a screenshot to show you a bit of what you stand to enjoy..

I have a good feeling you'll thank me for this!

Do Have a splendid Monday ahead!

Love, Yours Truly!

No matter how smart a robot is, it can never feel.

It can only describe what you already feel.

Learn from that robot and use that knowledge of description to better describe all the feelings you have felt and can feel.

Take a piece of paper and pen, or with just your notepad app..

write down what made you emotional today or any day you remember.

Forget the grammar, spelling, paragraphing and every other writing rule that'll delay your thoughts.

Don't go back to edit, just write it all out.

If it was something joyful, I bet you that act alone will make you feel like you RE-LIVED that moment.

And if it was sad, as you write you'll begin to feel your heart getting lighter and lighter.
I so much love this second one because it is by this means that I advice my self most times.

And when you're done, hide it somewhere like a treasure you can revisit whenever you wish, or show it to someone close to your heart.

Or better yet, shred it.

That moment when you shred it, you'll experience the serene feeling of writing just for your self!

Everybody loves stories.

Every writer should learn how to tell them in most if not all their write-ups.

Historical events is a good point to start from..
