In 1923, at just 19 years old, René Lacoste left his studies to fully pursue tennis. After winning the French Covered Court Championships and competing at the Wimbledon Championships alongside Jean Borotra, he was selected to represent France in the Davis Cup.

While preparing for a match against Australia in Boston, Lacoste saw a crocodile-skin suitcase in a shop window and jokingly made a bet with his team captain: if he won his match, the captain would buy the suitcase for him. Although Lacoste eventually lost the match, journalists covering the event heard the story and began calling him “The Crocodile” because of his tenacity on the court.

The nickname stayed with him throughout his career and later inspired the famous crocodile logo of Lacoste.
