I love working with sponsors, and have a black belt at helping them get the most from their investment. (And that is what it is about for them… and investment. They want to get their brand/services/products in front of your people. And this is an opportunity for them to do just that.)

It’s important NOT to turn my keynote speech into a commercial. Your audience will hate us if we do that. But it’s also important that your sponsor gets MORE than just a mention, a banner, and a handshake. I’m great at helping them get value without offending your folks. How? I use gospel principles and humour. I am able to talk about the sponsor, their talking points and their needs in a way that REALLY helps them get their info out there in a fun, safe way. And the audience will know who helped bring me in to speak to them, and whatever talking points they wanted to get across.

Bottom line: I can use humor and the gospel principles to make everybody grasp the RAW info and meet the needs of the sponsor, you as a planner, and the audience as a whole.

Want to set up a conference call with a potential sponsor and me to discuss how we do this? Contact me directly by this FORM http://goo.gl/forms/C3Dr1JbnmN or visit my website HERE! www.franklynakinyosoye.com

José Mourinho slams Chelsea show as ‘disgraceful’ after FA Cup shock

José Mourinho lambasted his Chelsea players after they slid meekly out of the FA Cup, beaten 4-2 at home by Bradford City of League One.

Mourinho usually defends his teams to the hilt but he labelled the display of the Premier League leaders – albeit with an understrength side containing nine changes – as “disgraceful” and “unacceptable” after the visitors brilliantly fought back from 2-0 down after 38 minutes. “I feel happy for Bradford,” Mourinho said. “In my bad feelings with the game and with the result, I can find space to feel happy for them. But on the other hand, I feel ashamed.

“The players should feel exactly the same as I feel. This is the beauty of football, of the FA Cup. In not many sports is it possible that the best team loses to a team with completely different potential. But this is just one part of my feelings. I repeat the words that I used [on Friday] in the press conference: ‘If we lose, it’s a disgrace’.

“For me, it’s just unacceptable to lose against a team from a lower league. If I was you [a reporter], I would be very critical of Chelsea, with the Chelsea manager and the Chelsea players.”

Defeat means Chelsea cannot win four trophies this season, though they still have the Capital One Cup, Premier League and Champions League to fight for. They take on Liverpool at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday in the second leg of their League Cup semi-final, with the tie locked at 1-1.

With that match in mind, Mourinho denied that fielding a weakened team on Saturday had played a part in Chelsea’s surprising downfall, their first home defeat of the season. “The other players [who don’t usually start] have to be ready to play,” he said. “They have to be ready to play in any game. If they cannot play against a team from the Championship or League One or League Two, what do we do? The selection was good enough.

“It was basically the same team that played against Watford in the third round. And against Watford we won. I have spoken about rotation, I give chances to the players that don’t play. So what I did was more than normal.

“The players that played, we are not speaking about a team of kids. The selection was more than good enough. So I think the word football ‘disgrace’ is a good word for what happened to us.”

The problem with smart people

When hiring, promoting, even just putting together your team, you should look for the smartest people in the room, right? Not so fast.

Intelligence is one of those characteristics where there is a minimum level needed to be in the game. Once past that, too much intelligence can be a drawback or worse.

The Enron management team, for example, were known as “the smartest guys in the room.” Consider how well that turned out. The former US energy trading company tapped its top talent to run some of its most-profitable divisions, almost without supervision. The managers, despite their smarts, were an arrogant, insecure bunch who took wild chances and lost billions of dollars. The company dissolved in 2001.

The problem with really smart people is that they often think they know more than everyone else.

Certainly, the job for which you’re hiring makes a difference. I do want big-time intelligence for researchers, analysts, and coders, but you can lock those folks in a room and let them do their thing because they work on their own. If they lack emotional intelligence or interpersonal skills, any damage they do is limited because of their independent work.

But do I really need to find the smartest managers?

The problem with smart people

The problem with really smart people is that they often think they know more than everyone else. Maybe they do. But that doesn’t help them when they’re trying to get others to buy into whatever they’re selling. For example, I was coaching one senior executive who always seemed to be one step ahead of everyone else on her team. At least, that’s what she thought. One of the biggest challenges she faced was recognising that other managers didn’t necessarily view the world the same way. That meant she needed to invest the time to bring them along if she wanted to get traction on her preferred projects.

When you know the right answer, you often can’t believe that everyone else doesn’t just see the same thing, and fall into line.

Unfortunately, organisations don’t work that way. Especially when working with peers when you don’t have direct authority over them, the only way to get momentum toward your preferred outcome is to sell them on the idea. Imposing your “superior” solution just doesn’t work.

The irony is that sometimes the most talented person can make for one of the most ineffective managers. You can see this in sports, for example, where retired superstars often find it difficult to coach or manage successfully because they are now supervising lesser mortals that weren’t blessed with the same degree of innate talent.

Wayne Gretzky, the Canadian hockey legend who retired with more personal scoring records than anyone in the history of professional hockey, was remarkably ineffective as a head coach. The same may be said about Michael Jordan, perhaps the greatest basketball player ever, who has never been able to lead a successful basketball organisation whether as general manager, president or owner.

It could be just as bad when we let the A-level crowd go to market with what they see as the best product. I remember talking to managers at Singapore-based Creative Technology, Inc after the iPod had just been introduced by Apple. Creative had a technologically superior MP3 player, but customers preferred the iPod, to the utter dismay of the Creative managers. They just couldn’t understand how customers were so irrational!

But it turns out that the best technology doesn’t always win, just like the smartest people don’t always succeed.

It’s not just brainpower where more may also not be better. For example, is it good to keep reducing the time it takes for technicians to help customers requesting assistance via call-in centres? What about the quality of the advice, how the customer perceives the value of the advice or even whether it’s such a great idea in the first place to try to optimise on speed?

Zappos, the US-based online shoe store, actually rewards employees for spending more time with customers who call in with questions about products they are thinking of buying. For Zappos, customer experience on a call trumps any simple metric that, in its view, can actually detract from profitability.

When employees are motivated to cycle through customers as fast as possible, platitudes that the customer comes first are just that — empty, cynical slogans that mean nothing to sales staff.

And let’s not forget the side effect that accompanies this culture. People who really care about service look elsewhere for work. That leaves demotivated employees who actually do a good job of hitting their time targets. In the end, you get what you want, but you lose because of un-nuanced thinking that more is better than less.

Call it brilliantly fulfilling the wrong vision.

The quest for more may well be the defining ethos of our time, but the downside that comes with this single-minded fixation warrants greater attention. Relying on the smartest and the most talented to lead and manage people and teams may be one of those things that sounds a lot better in theory than in practice.

5 Daily Habits Of Successful Entrepreneurs

Have you ever noticed that when you get things right in your business, other opportunities start arriving, with almost no effort on your part?

It’s all about momentum. Other people—potential employees, prospects, vendors—naturally want to be part of a good thing, so they flock when your business is growing.

In interviewing many successful entrepreneurs over the years, I’ve noticed that they often rely on small daily habits and routines—both in business and their personal lives that keep the needle on their business moving in the right direction. These disciplines aren’t complicated but they pay big dividends.

1. Plan tomorrow’s agenda today

Scott Cullather, CEO of inVNT, a live events agency in New York, meets with his key support team before the close of business to go over what’s coming up the next day. “We review and forecast what tomorrow is going to look like and how we’re going to get through that,” he says. “It gives us an opportunity to re-prioritize. It also allows us to go to bed at night. Your mind does a lot of work for you while you’re sleeping. You get there the next day and are much more efficient and productive.” This focused approach has helped growth, he says. The company expects sales to rise from $20 million last year to at least $25 million this year.

2. Put your meetings on a diet

Ask entrepreneurs who left corporate America what they don’t miss and they’ll tell you it’s those endless, often unproductive gatherings around the conference room table drawn out by flabby agendas and presentation technology that takes forever to get set up. Many fast-growth companies keep meetings short, so employees have time to get projects done. For instance, Cullather limits his afternoon huddle to about 15 minutes.

3. Find a way to manage e-mail that works for you

They key is to avoid getting sucked into constantly responding to and sending e-mails, which delays you from finishing projects on time.

Many business owners like the system suggested by David Allen, the well-known author of Getting Things Done. He offers a free PDF full of smart tips, such as putting e-mails you need to act on—and those you don’t—in separate places in your inbox.

Another strategy that many use: Find ways to reduce the number of useless messages you view, so you have more time to work on what matters. OtherInbox, for instance, pulls e-mails from various senders into folders you’ve designated and even unsubscribes you from e-newsletters you no longer want. You can use it for functions such as filing all of your e-mails from a particular client in one folder. It’s available on AOL and Yahoo! mail. Some enterprise systems offer filing systems, too—so if you use one, make sure you set aside an hour to master it.

4. Never stop selling

You’ll lose productive days if you wait until you’re almost done with your current projects to pitch new business. Projects can get dropped, clients can run short of cash and other things can go wrong in an economy like the one we’re in. The smartest entrepreneurs I know are always cultivating new business, so they can quickly plug holes that open in their schedule. Often, it’s a matter of sending in a project with a quick note saying, “Anything else I can help you with?” at the end. They are, of course, prepared to bring on temporary help in case they get overbooked as a result—even if it’s simply through an arrangement with a reliable freelance colleague.

5. Exercise regularly

Cullather puts on his running shoes at 5:30 or 6 a.m. daily, and then hits the streets. “It’s amazing to me how many creative ideas have come to me during these long runs in creative solitude,” he says. “Not only does it give you the physical endurance to work 18 or 20 hours a day and travel around the world but it helps stimulate your mind and your thinking.” When Cullather is traveling, he hits the gym—often a great chance to spend time with clients or network informally. “When we’re working with Fortune 500 companies, their senior executives are there at 5:30 or 6, before the conference begins,” he says.

Shouldn’t you be there, too?
