What does this adage mean?

POV: If you truly want to become something big or great, you must stop chasing small, useless things. A cat that wants to grow as big as a tiger cannot keep eating rats; it needs to change its mindset and its diet. In the same way, a person who wants success must drop small habits, petty thinking, and distractions that keep them small. You cannot dream big but live small. If you want a bigger future, you must be willing to let go of what is easy, cheap, or comfortable now.

The Pidgin adage “fowl wey come new area, na one leg e take dey stand” literally means that a chicken that has just arrived in a new place stands on one leg. Figuratively, it describes someone who is new to an environment and therefore behaves with extra caution, restraint, or humility. Just like the chicken is alert and unsure of its surroundings, a newcomer is careful not to make mistakes, offend others, or draw unnecessary attention while trying to understand how things work in the new setting.

My lesson from this adage is the importance of wisdom and caution when entering a new situation, whether it is a workplace, community, school, or relationship. It teaches that rushing to act boldly without understanding the environment can lead to problems. By observing, listening, and learning first, a person gains knowledge and acceptance, which eventually allows them to stand confidently on “two legs” once they are settled and familiar with the terrain.

Peace be unto you.

“Strawberry nor go ripe according to the wishes of monkey”

Things in life do not happen just because someone wants them to. No matter how much the monkey desires the strawberry to ripen, it will only ripen in its own time. In simple terms, reality is not controlled by personal wishes, impatience, or pressure. Nature, people, and situations follow their own processes and timing, not individual desires.

The lesson from this adage is the importance of patience, realism, and humility. It teaches that effort does not always bring immediate results, and wanting something badly does not guarantee getting it quickly—or at all. It also warns against entitlement: the world does not owe anyone success simply because they desire it. Instead, one should learn to work wisely, wait when necessary, accept outcomes maturely, and adapt to circumstances rather than trying to force life to bend to one’s wishes.

Your only Hack in life is Prayer in addition to your hard and smart work. You can cause changes and achieve quantum leaps of grace through prayer...not entitlement.

“Persin wey get well nor dey join queue to fetch water”

Hmmn. So true. Preparation creates freedom. When you take time to build your own source—skills, discipline, or vision—you won’t be stuck competing for leftovers when opportunities are scarce.

The lesson is clear: invest in yourself early and consistently. What you build in silence will save you in public pressure, and self-development today prevents struggle tomorrow.
