FROM FARM TO CONTINENT:How AfCFTA Could Redefine Agribusiness in Nigeria

At dawn in Kaiama, in Nigeria’s North-Central region, Musa Alhassan steps into his cassava field with the quiet determination that has defined his life as a farmer. For years, his harvest rarely travelled beyond the nearest town market. Middlemen dictated prices. Storage was poor. Transportation was costly. Often, part of the harvest spoiled before buyers even arrived.

Yet Musa now speaks with a cautious sense of hope. He has begun supplying a cassava processing facility linked to regional buyers. Some of the processed products, he has been told, are already moving across borders into other African countries.

Beyond the Hoe: Why Igala Farmers Must Think in Value Chains

In many communities across Igalaland, farming begins at dawn and ends at sunset. The routine is familiar. Land is cleared, seeds are planted, crops are harvested, and produce is taken to the nearest market. Income depends largely on the day’s price, the mood of middlemen, and the season’s fortune. For generations, this pattern has fed households and sustained rural life. Yet it has also kept many farmers trapped in narrow margins. The problem is no longer effort. Igala farmers work hard. The problem is approach.Across much of the region, agriculture is still treated as production alone. Business thinking remains limited to a small segment, notably some cashew orchard owners who understand long-term planning, export standards, and price timing. Outside that circle, the average farmer grows crops but rarely manages a value chain. This is the knowledge gap.

From Farmgate to Fair Pay: Turning Nigerian Farming Into a Business

Before sunrise, Nigerian farmers are already working, but the difference today is not just effort, it’s strategy. With smartphones, cooperatives, and digital platforms like FarmCrowdy and Zowasel, farmers can now know what the market wants, who will buy, and at what price. Instead of planting blindly and hoping for the best, they are growing crops that sell, connecting directly to buyers, and earning fair, stable incomes. Market-focused farming is turning smallholder farms from a seasonal struggle into thriving businesses, proving that when farmers understand demand, agriculture becomes a reliable path to prosperity for rural Nigeria.

Kogi’s 2026 Cashew Policy: Ambition, Enforcement and the Risk of Local sabotage

A Test of Discipline in Nigeria’s Cashew Heartland

When Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo unveiled Kogi State’s 2026 cashew policy, the message was direct. The state would no longer remain a raw produce corridor. It would become a processing and packaging hub.

Kogi is already one of Nigeria’s strongest cashew belts. What the new policy attempts is not mere expansion, but control. Control of quality. Control of pricing. Control of who participates in the trade and how value is retained within the state.

The real question is whether enforcement will match ambition.

NIGERIA’S N800 BILLION INDUSTRIAL GAMBIT: CAN AGRO-PROCESSING AND RENEWABLE ENERGY RESET THE ECONOMY

Nigeria has spoken often about moving beyond crude oil. This time, it has put money on the table.Recently, the Federal Government unveiled a bold commitment under the National Industrial Policy 2025. It plans to channel N800 billion into agro-processing and renewable energy, two sectors long identified as critical to industrial revival. The announcement, made by the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, signals a structured attempt to deepen value addition, expand reliable power supply and reposition local industries within African and global markets. The question is no longer whether Nigeria understands its problem. The question is whether this funding framework can finally correct it.The Case for Agro-ProcessingFor decades, Nigeria has exported raw commodities and imported finished goods at a premium. Cashew, cocoa, sesame, ginger and shea often leave the country in unprocessed form. The jobs, foreign exchange stability and industrial learning that come with processing are captured elsewhere.Under the new policy, N500 billion is earmarked for agro-processing.

ELEOJO OBAJE PETERS: LEADING THE CHARGE IN THE RICE REVOLUTION

Across Nigeria’s rice belts, a steady transformation is unfolding. It is not driven by slogans or seasonal enthusiasm. It is rooted in training, discipline, and a clear understanding that the future of rice production rests largely in the hands of women who cultivate the fields. At the forefront of this effort is Eleojo Obaje Peters.

Through the platform of the federation of women in rice value chains, Peters has anchored a practical campaign to strengthen the capacity of rural women in rice farming. Her conviction is direct

NCAN EXPELLS ADEMOLA ADESOKAN

The Fourth Nigeria Cashew Day and 2026 Cashew Season Flag-Off ended in Abuja with far-reaching resolutions for the growth of Nigeria’s cashew industry. Yet, beyond the policy debates on processing, finance, and global trade, one decision stood out for its institutional weight and long-term implications. The National Cashew Association of Nigeria, NCAN, formally expelled Mr. Ademola Adesokan from the Association.
