........
A family in Itacajá, in Brazil's Tocantins State, was having a water leak repaired when they discovered something no one could have imagined.
Workers began breaking the ceramic floor tiles to find the source of the leak. As they removed the tiles, they were shocked to find a live tortoise trapped underneath the sealed floor.
The family could hardly believe their eyes.
The homeowner's granddaughter, Regina, said the floor had been completely sealed with no gaps. The tiles had been laid 13 years earlier, and experts believe the tortoise had likely been trapped beneath them for about 10 years.
No one knows exactly how it ended up there, but somehow it managed to stay alive for years in complete darkness.
Experts believe the tortoise survived by eating insects and small amounts of organic matter that were found in the hidden space beneath the floor. Even though the conditions were extremely difficult, it never gave up.
When the tortoise was finally rescued, it was in poor condition. After spending so many years in darkness, its eyes had become very sensitive to light. Its shell had also become deformed after being pressed against the hard ceramic tiles for such a long time.
The tortoise quickly began eating the food it was given, reportedly as if it had been starving.
The family immediately contacted the Tocantins Nature Institute, which arranged to collect the tortoise and provide the care and treatment it needed.
The unbelievable rescue amazed people across Brazil. After surviving for nearly a decade beneath a sealed floor, the tortoise was finally back in the sunlight, getting a second chance at life.
