CROSS SELL AND UPSELL

Cross selling is when you sell to your customers complementary products to the purchases they have made.

Upselling is selling a more expensive version of a product that a customer own or is buying.

A very good example of a cross sell is:

Let's say you sell Powerbanks, Chargers, phone accessories in general, someone comes around to purchase a powerbank from you.

You can cross-sell the person by introducing to him strong charger that could charge his powerbank faster than he can imagine.

Before he leaves, you can also show him different type of handsfree he could also use for his phone.

With this, if you could cross-sell him well, he could get the charger and the handsfree.

This way, you could retain the customer for long because he will always have it in his mind that any products concerning phone accessories he looks for in your store, he can always get it.

An example of upsell is a customer wanting to buy an earbud but you later suggested to him a noise cancellation earbud that comes with power bank for him.

If truly he needs it and he is capable of buying, he will be very quick to jump into taking your advice.

Steve Job said people don't know what they want untill you show it to them.

You showing your customer a more expensive version of your products would increase your sales as a business person.

You too figure it out yourself number of times you would want to buy something and end up buying another one at the same store.

Many of the examples of presell and upsell are common in our local market among our mothers.

Let me bring you one.

What does it mean to scale up a business?

Scaling up simply means making your business reach more people who are most likely to buy from it.

There used to be this popular talk people talked about...I don't know whether it's a theory tho...but it do work.

The theory is that if you want some particular people to do somethings for you let's say like 100, ten out of them is most likely to obey your order
The same thing also works with marketing too...if you show your products to like 100people, 10 are most likely to buy from you.

So back to our discussion, we have two types of scaling.

We have the vertical scaling and horizontal scaling.

Vertical scaling means increasing the amounts a customer spend with you.
Horizontal scaling means reaching more people.

So how do you acheive these?

Let's say you make a profit of like 5k on one particular products, you can persuade your customer to buy more of that products from you.

This way, if he's used to buying one before and he was now able to buy like up to 5, this will increase your profits
Horizontal scaling means reaching more people
How do you achieve this?

There are many ways to do this.
1. Mouth to mouth marketing
2. Social media marketing
Etc
Mouth to mouth is when customer talk about your business telling their friends, families etc
This method is good but it will not go far and give you desired results.

Social Media marketing is using social media like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, TikTok etc.
The best way to make more people see your products is using social media

Remember there are many reasons why people won't buy from you.

What do you sell?

But people are finding it difficult to buy or get it from you.

The reasons includes: Maybe they are not well acquainted with your brand therefore not trusting you enough as a business person and many other reasons.

But the thing is that as a Business Owner, people who are your customer, Can they really afford your price?

Taking note of this is very important and will have an impact in your sales
And another factor which might make people not to buy from you is that.

They don't have money

I repeat

THEY DON'T HAVE MONEY.

No matter how you try persuading them, they will end up not buying from you.

But if you have figured this two out

1. They have money to buy from you.
2. They trust you

Then what next are you going to do to entice them to buying from you?

Create a juicy offer which they will be glad they take action
So how do you do this?
Let's say you sell a Phone now.

You can add a gift for anyone that make an order from you.

How do you do that too?

You add a free gift that's pertaining to your products. E.g You can add Free delivery, free Bluetooth earpod etc and your customer will be glad they buy from you.

Let me give you a similar experience of this in one of our popular market in Ibadan.

I mean Gbagi Market.

Someone told me something about it though I haven't experience it personally but I have confirmed it from more than 3 people.

The experience is

The moment you enter their shop like this, though they do check how you dress before giving you access to the gift.

The moment you enter their shop, the first thing they offer you is a seat even before you start saying anything.
Before you say anything, they already opened a Chilled Bottled Malt for you.

They will persuade you to take it. During the course of you sipping the drink, you will be shown different type of cloth that you won't have choice than to later buy from them as a result of good the cloth will be advertise to you.

At the end of the day, they will add their #200 for malt and other in addition to your price which you won't even notice when you are being sold to.

What am I driving at by bringing this?

Create something your customer will be glad they have in addition to buying from you and you later remove it from the cost of your products later.

As a business owner, what does Testimonials means to you and how do you make use of it?

It can either be in a written form, audio form or video form.
Testimonials is showing how your products or services had helped your previous customers.

Sometimes,you get testimonials from your customer without having to ask them for it
And at times, you need to request them for it.

So how does Testimonials contribute to the progress of your business?
It build a trust about you for your customers.
I.e you can not come and meet me and say you sell so so and so products.
At first, I will not believe you until you provide an evidence of people such products have helped in the past.
