DEHORNING: SOMETIMES IT'S A NECESSITY, NOT AN OPTION!

One of the routine management practices in ruminant production is dehorning. While many people see horns as a symbol of beauty and strength, there are situations where keeping them can become a serious welfare issue.

Recently, we had to carry out a dehorning operation on a ram whose horn had grown in such a way that it was about to fracture and pe*****te its own skull.

Left unattended, this could have resulted in severe pain, infection, reduced feed intake, and even death.

Dehorning is not just about preventing injuries to handlers or other animals. In some cases, it is a necessary intervention to protect the animal from harming itself.

This is why regular observation of your livestock is critical. Early detection of abnormal horn growth, injuries, or deformities allows timely intervention before they become life-threatening.
