On the morning of January 29, 1979, sixteen-year-old Brenda Ann Spencer took aim from her home across the street from Grover Cleveland Elementary School in San Diego, California. Armed with a semi-automatic .22 caliber rifle she had received as a Christmas gift from her father, Spencer opened fire on students and staff as they arrived for school. In total, she fired over 30 rounds, killing the school’s principal, Burton Wragg, and custodian, Mike Suchar, while injuring eight children and a police officer.
The attack sent shockwaves across the nation, not only because of the age of the shooter and victims, but also due to the chilling reason Spencer gave for the violence. When questioned by a reporter during a standoff with police, she famously replied, “I don’t like Mondays. This livens up the day.” Her detached response added a layer of horror and confusion to an already senseless act, sparking conversations about youth violence, mental health, and gun access in America.
Spencer was eventually apprehended after several hours and later pleaded guilty to two counts of murder and assault with a deadly weapon. She was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison. The tragedy inspired widespread media attention and even cultural response, most notably The Boomtown Rats’ song “I Don’t Like Mondays,” which became a stark reminder of how a moment of violence can haunt a community—and a country—for decades.
