SEO should 10x business profits (not just build traffic)

An eCommerce SEO strategy "should" fuel business profits:

- SEO -> Increase profit
- SEO -> Take Google market share
- SEO -> 5x customer list to market to
- SEO -> Build a sustainable digital brand asset

There's a weird balance between SEO and PPC budgets.

Look.

An organic campaign is investing X amount to grow Y amount over time.

(No secret business fundamental = Profits fuel business growth)

PPC, SEO, Socail and Content marketing are used to increase business profits.

But.

Not all are given equal weight, right?

PPC has always and will always (near future) be given 10x the budget of SEO.

This leads to 90%+ of brands skipping $billions in organic revenue.

Instead.

Investments fuel an SEO campaign -> fuels growth:

- SEO deserves more value
- UX is a big cog in the SEO machine
- CRO is also a profit cog in the SEO machine
- SEO should be a dominant marketing channel for any brand

Here's the magic 🪄

Google increases brand profits when trust is there for a customer's journey.

Do a Google search of any product-related keyword to see who Google is trusting with profit growth.

It's frustrating to see a brand invest more into Instagram vs. SEO when they have so much potential with organic search.

Let's not forget.

Most successful eCommerce brands fuel profits with PPC.

But, my question is, "Why just rent the tap, when you can own it (SEO)?".

Try this simple calculation:

- Monthly PPC Spend / Monthly SEO campaign = "Tell me your industry averages in the comments"

It's not easy for brands to allocate marketing budget, but investment in SEO leads to business profits/growth.

Agree?

Delete your content to get better SEO results.

According to Google:

“Removing unhelpful content could help the rankings of your other content.”

Now, before you go and start deleting stuff, there’s an easy way to attack this.

Open Screaming Frog, connect the GA4, Google Search Console, and Ahrefs APIs, and then run a crawl.

Download the report and add it to a Google Sheet.

Then, filter your results to look for pages that have 0 traffic from GA4, 0 impressions from Google Search Console, and 0 backlinks from Ahrefs.

Any page that meets this criteria is a candidate for deletion.

And no:

Keeping content that no one likes doesn't help build topic authority.

Backlinks are what determine who is an authority.

Here’s how I learned SEO:

You can’t learn SEO from a book or a course.

Instead, here’s what you have to do:

Learn by doing.

How? In 3 steps:

1: Start your own website.

2: Study everything you can about SEO.

3: Tweak, test and see what works.

Do this - and you’ll also save yourself thousands in university fees.

Today I want to share how we ranked for a national keyword that gets 10,000 searches per month.

Here’s how we did it:

1. Find a keyword that we can actually rank for

Shocking, I know.

But you need to spend so much time qualifying your keyword targets.

It’s much more efficient (and smart) to target keywords your website is capable of ranking for.

You will waste time, money, and effort going after competitive keywords.

If you have a super strong website, then it sometimes makes sense to tackle monster keywords.

But for 99.9% of campaigns, it’s much easier to target low-competition keywords.

Then, as your website authority grows, you can go after the big ones.

I’ve shared an enormous amount of information about keyword qualification inside my One on One SEO Training, but here are 3 quick tips:

☑️Quickly filter through keywords based on Keyword Difficulty (KD)

Ahrefs KD score from their Keyword Explorer is scary effective. I’ll explain why in a second.

But you can easily filter through thousands of keywords using KD alone.

I set the filter on Ahrefs to show keywords that have a KD < 10. I’ve found that this is the sweet spot. If your site doesn’t have much authority, set it to < 5.

Once you’ve found an uncompetitive keyword, then next step is to:

☑️Analyze your competitors at a high-level

Gather averages for the top 10 competitors for their website authority, total links hitting their target page, word count, etc.

Then compare those averages against your websites.

If the gaps are too big, then reconsider. If your keyword passes the high-level analysis, then it’s time to:

☑️Perform a deep competitor analysis

You’ll need to go page-by-page and see what the competitors are doing well or not doing well. All of this information should go into an SEO content brief.

2. Create an Intelligent SEO Content Brief

I highly recommend you create a template for your SEO content briefs. It should include some of the following key points:

☑️What are the lag goals for this content?

Lag goals are goals that you can’t control right now such as keyword rankings and more organic search traffic.

☑️What’s the search intent?

Identifying the intent of your keyword should dictate your strategy. You put most keywords in four buckets: informational, transactional, comparison, and navigational.

☑️What’s the ideal word count?

See what competitor has the biggest word count and make your target 2x bigger than theirs.

☑️How many backlinks will we need?

Here’s the exact phrase I used in my SEO content brief for this point: “Based on Ahrefs’ Keyword Difficulty tool, we will need at least backlinks to rank for this keyword phrase.”

These 4 of 22 points that I tackle within my SEO content brief template. You can get access to this proven template as a member of My One on One training Program.

Now let’s move onto the step that’s super interesting.

3. Acquire Backlinks

So based on Ahrefs KD score, we needed backlinks from ~ 2 websites to rank in the top 10.

I wanted to put this to the test. So we found a few link opportunities and acquired backlinks on two websites.

Then we waited.

We published this SEO content asset on November 14th and it reached the first page on December 19th.

Pretty cool, right?

And for good measure, we repeated this same process with another keyword on the same website.

Same result:

I’ve used Ahrefs’ KD score for a long time, but never this specifically. It’s crazy how well it works when you follow it.

Now keep in mind:

Just acquiring backlinks isn’t enough.

The real magic happens BEFORE you acquire links. In other words, you need to know how to create effective SEO content.

That’s the lead domino.

It simply won’t matter how many backlinks you get if you don’t get your content right.

10 SEO Quick Wins in under 10 minutes or less..👇

1. Add the primary keyword in the following locations:

☑️ Title tag
☑️ First Sentence
☑️ URL
☑️ Meta Description
☑️ SEO Title
☑️ First Sentence
☑️ First H2 Tag
☑️ Last Sentence

2. Add Internal Links to the target page from other pages. [Priotize relevant pages]

3. Optimize for Intent

4. Add original images & videos to the post.

5. Optimize the posts for Featured snippets ranking.

6. Perform Surfer SEO NLP Optimizaiton for those pages.

7. Optimize for EEAT

8. Narrow (and exceed) the link gap by building high authority link with an exact match anchor text.

If you're not ranking, look at your backlink profile.

More often than not, your competitors have more backlinks than you.

Examine two things:

☑️The total # of referring domains (RDs) that your top competitors have for their entire domains

☑️The total # of RDs the competitors have for specific keywords

You may do #2 well, but without narrowing the domain gap, you'll still struggle.

9. Examine the top 5 competitors and see what pages they're linking out to. Then link out to similar pages if it makes sense.

10. Optimize the load time of the particular page - make it load faster!
