Of many other things, one of the areas that I oftentimes come across where marketers require training and mentoring is in the actual process of developing a digital marketing plan.

The aim of this post is to help those of you who are saddled with the task of producing a coherent plan with a tried and tested working structure for doing so.

What you often find when dealing with companies, both large and small, is that, they do not actually have a written plan that they can put their hand to and say ‘this is our digital marketing plan’. The purpose of a digital marketing plan for any organisation is to force you through the process of researching and clearly articulating the aims and goals of your digital initiatives, along with clearly targeting digital personas, and methodically choosing which channels to go after them and how.

Over the next few days, I would take you through some of the most important aspect of a digital marketing plan... Stay connected!

It's nice to be the center of attention, but business is about making profitable sales, not winning a popularity contest.
- Josh Kaufman

Attention won't matter if the people you're attracting careless about what you're doing. If all you're looking for is attention, dont bother with all of these business stuffs.

When it comes to business, some kind of attention aren't worth having. The attention of the people you need are those whose interests connects with your offering and are most likely to purchase from you - otherwise, you're wasting your precious time.

To get the attention of the right category of people, you can start by asking these questions :

1. Who are my target audience? (Those who would benefit the most from my offering)
2. Where can I find them? (This would determine your geo, where to appear)
3. How can I best reach them?

In today's digital world, one thing is certain - whatever product or service a person is looking for, the first place the average customer looks for what they want is online. They most likely would start their search on Google.

If you have no online presence at all, you won't be found, and you can't compete.

If also, you have an online presence but your competitors are easier to find and are found, you still might not be found at all.

Aside creating a website, in order for you to move ahead of your competitors, there is need for you to learn search engine optimisation (SEO) strategy to be the first name a prospect would find in a Google search with keywords that can lead them to your business.

Be accessible to your customers.

Dont get it twisted, marketing and sales are two different things.

Marketing is the art of prospecting. However, having tons of prospects isn't enough if no one pulls out their wallet to pay.

The sales process starts with a PROSPECT and ends with a PAYING CUSTOMER.

For your business to be a great success, you need to pay close attention to what your competitors are doing and learn from it.

Think of your competitors not just as those you are planning and trying to beat, but as people who have something you can learn from.

A close look at what your competitors are doing, helps you get some idea of what is working and what isn’t working. Whatever type of business you are in, most likely, your competitors have established a web presence.

What kind of content are they using?

Are they blogging, or are they using a lot of graphics and videos?

In what ways do they communicate their brand and what makes them unique?

How well do they engage with their audience? Do you think you can do better? It is totally impossible if you don’t engage in competing in the digital world.

If your prospects start to search for a business similar to yours and are able to find your competitors’ online but not yours, your business is not even in the running. Your prospects can’t choose you if they know nothing about you. In this instance, your competitors have just raced ahead of you whether or not they have an effective website or a clear message.

This is the business dynamics of today. When someone has an interest in your business, be it in your niche in general or if they are curious about your brand, the first thing they are going to do is research online and see what they can find out about you.

They expect to find you there with a website and a social media presence. They probably may be looking out for reviews inorder to learn what other people are saying about your company and whether it is a good place to do business.

If for any reason, a potential customer can’t find you online, they may conclude that your business doesn’t appear to be legitimate. There is a very good chance that a lot of these prospects may decide not to take your business seriously and they will quickly head somewhere else.

Once they have made that decision, you probably wont find them again!

Why would you choose to postpone putting time and effort into digital marketing? Different small business owners may come up with a variety of reasons to avoid this form of marketing, but in the end, procrastination is still procrastination.

Why would you choose to postpone putting time and effort into digital marketing? Different small business owners may come up with a variety of reasons to avoid this form of marketing.

Small businesses sometimes believe that they don’t have the time or the money to be competitive online. Others think they can only face so many challenges all at once and they are still learning the ins and outs of business in general.

Many of them may prefer to take things slowly and to stick with one or two basic forms of advertising, assuming that their business will evolve as time passes.

They may even think the best strategy is simply to wait for customers to show up. Since they are a small business, they may think they only need a small number of customers.

This is not an effective approach. There is never a guarantee that your business will attract customers just by existing and even if it does, you may not attract as many customers as you need to make your business become profitable.

No business can survive without marketing. No matter how great your product is, if people dont know you exist, they can't and won't purchase what you have to offer.

Also, the people who have no interest in what you have to offer won't become paying customers.

Every thriving business finds ways to attract the attention of the right people and make them interested on what's being offered. Without prospects, you won't sell anything regardless of the VALUE you're offering, and without completing profitable transactions, your business will fail.
