Ademola Lookman, born in Wandsworth, UK, and having spent his entire life in Europe, embraced his Yoruba heritage during the 2024 African Footballer of the Year Award ceremony. He ascended the stage in traditional Yoruba attire and commenced his speech in fluent Yoruba, saying, “E kale Nigeria, mo n kii gbo gbo yin. E shey, Modupe,” which translates to “Good evening Nigeria. I greet every one of you; thank you, I appreciate.”
Throughout his career, Lookman has maintained the authenticity of his name, embodying the qualities of an ‘Omoluabi’—a person of integrity and respect in Yoruba culture. This stands in contrast to many individuals born and raised in Nigeria who may not speak their native languages and sometimes ridicule others for not speaking English proficiently.
This scenario underscores the resilience and durability of Yoruba culture, often referred to as Lukumi in the diaspora. Unlike some cultures that diminish when transplanted abroad, Yoruba traditions not only survive but also influence and sometimes dominate host cultures, particularly in regions like South America.
Prior to this achievement, Afrobeat—a music genre rooted in Yoruba culture—has been a leading global musical force. Now, with Lookman’s recognition, a footballer of Yoruba descent has ascended to the pinnacle of African football. His journey exemplifies the importance of embracing one’s cultural identity, regardless of geographical location video
