The biggest communication mistake professionals make is trying to sound intelligent.
You've seen it before.
Someone asks a simple question in a meeting.
And a professional responds with a five-minute answer full of jargon, corporate buzzwords, and complicated explanations.
Everyone nods.
But nobody actually understands what was said.
Here's the irony:
The most respected communicators in business are rarely the people who sound the smartest.
They are the people who make complex ideas feel simple.
Senior executives don't promote people because they use big grammar.
They trust people who bring clarity.
People who can walk into confusion and create understanding.
People who can explain a problem, a solution, and a recommendation without making everyone work hard to follow them.
That's why communication anxiety often gets worse the more competent someone becomes.
They know so much that they struggle to simplify it.
They overthink.
Over-explain.
Add unnecessary details.
And end up sounding less confident than they really are.
A useful rule:
If a 15-year-old cannot understand your explanation, it probably isn't clear enough.
In business, clarity beats complexity.
Every single time.
