While smallholder farmers have been recognized as potential agents in development strategies for food and agricultural production in both developed and developing countries, they lack the necessary resources and support to increase production capacity and their income status, leaving 72.0% of rural farmers in Nigeria in abject poverty.
Farmers in rural communities face a lot of challenges and depend on agriculture for a living. Ironically, they own and operate the great majority of these farms, but they can do very little to improve production capacity, food security, and their income status. Hence, the rising poverty rate of rural farmers in Nigeria and other African countries.
It is imperative that in the face of climate change and other factors affecting crop production, the growing population, and the increase in demand for food. The smallholder farmers, family farmers, including young farmers, women, and underserved groups involved in agriculture in rural communities should be included in projects that will improve their knowledge, techniques, and productive capacity to address food insecurity, provide sufficient and healthy food for all, and guarantee food security.
