I have a confession to make.

I am obsessed with helping individuals create an extra source/stream of income using their expertise, experience, connection or passion, and I can't help talking about it everywhere I find myself and with every person I meet.

It almost feels like a curse because I can't help myself.

At MTN where I work, during our Monday unit meetings, every member of the team is asked to share how their weekend went. When I share mine, I always end up telling the team that while they can do nothing about the economic policy of the government, they can do a lot with what they know (skills and expertise), who they know (connections and network), and what they are passionate about to generate more revenue and complain less about the economic state of the country.

I always reiterate to them that life does not start and end with their day job at MTN and that neither MTN nor any employer can pay them enough to live the life of their dreams.

Even when I engage courteous office assistants, I ask them what they do with their time when they are not cleaning, mopping or running errands, and how they can fit some revenue-generating value - even if it is virtual into that time.

During my MBA programme at Business School Netherlands some years ago, I was renowned for providing expert business advice to my coursemates who were either corporate professionals or business owners.

At my church - Calvary Bible Church - please don't even get me started on the quick advice and unsolicited consulting I give to fellow worshippers who just say hello and I feel that beneath that hello, something was amiss.

So, I have decided to put a structure to this passion and expertise of mine and will run a couple of free trainings in the form of webinars in the coming days to teach professionals like you how to start something and create at least one extra viable stream of income using your existing expertise, connection/network, or passion without leaving your paid job.

Therefore, if you are interested in creating at least one more stream of income, look out for the announcement of the date, and tell someone to tell someone about it.

On Excellence and Mediocrity.

Some days ago, I commented on a post by Oje Ojeaga where he wrote about the importance of always putting one's best foot forward.

It got me thinking that while many of us Nigerians agree that corruption is at the heart of Nigeria's struggles, mediocrity - manifested as the unwillingness to put their best foot forward - is the primary reason why Nigerian politicians take the corruption route to improve their political and economic status.

In my comment on the afore-mentioned post, I stated that your work is an indelible mark you leave on the hearts and minds of the recipients of your service. It is also a deposit of sorts made into your future and indebtedness to you that your quality work brings about for the recipients of your service.

I also stated that you never really know when you will need to make a withdrawal from the accumulated deposits or when you will need to call in the indebted favour. Your great work is also insurance for the future when you may not be able to provide the service anymore and would need to depend on respect for your past works to get references, favours, and a seat at new tables. Putting your best foot forward starts by giving you a foot-hold, but consistently done and done long enough, ensures the foot-hold becomes your stronghold.

From the above, you will realize that putting your best foot forward which is excellence in action takes care of both your present and your future. But it requires work and a desire for excellence.

But because mediocrity is easier and does not require hard work, it is much easier for the Nigerian politician to misappropriate or embezzle the commonwealth of the country, tamper with the judiciary, and go scot-free.

Little wonder why the modern Nigerian society and many of her youth who see the ease of unlawful aggrandizement do not see the need to pursue excellence in anything but instead prefer instant gratification and overnight success without putting in the work that ought to come with it.

There is a Yoruba wise saying - "Ifura logun agba" - that when loosely translated means "sensitivity is the protective shield of the elder"

In other words, a person who is sensitive and environmentally aware will be shielded from unfortunate events because the unfortunate events will be sensed before they occur, and consequently avoided.

Nothing happens suddenly. There are always tell-tale signs.

When a natural disaster is about to happen, you see animals start moving away from the environment in droves, and if you are sensitive enough, you will know that something bad is about to go down.

The same thing applies to an economy. Before any economy goes into recession, there will be signs from the different indicators of economic health long before the recession kicks in.

Before you go down fully with malaria, your body temperature starts rising, you start feeling cold, and then it progresses to aches and pains, particularly at your joints. That is the best time to confirm via a medical test that it is Malaria and then treat it.

Before a business goes down the drain or a career goes sideways, there are always tell-tale signs that show that something is wrong and is about to get worse.

It is therefore commonsense to know that if you must survive and thrive in this VUCA economy, you need to be very sensitive and environmentally aware.

You need to always look out for the tell-tale signs, and identify the potential effects of every action happening around you whether they impact you now or not.

You need to pay attention to the details of everything - after all, that's where the proverbial devil is.

You need to consistently keep your eyes on the big picture and the long-term impact of every happening around you, so that you are prepared for any and every eventuality.

You need to understand that sometimes the law of unintended consequences can throw a spanner in the works of even the best plans if the planner is not sensitive, environmentally aware, alert, and circumspect.

Listen to the news, particularly the ones that matter - like news about finance, government policies, world politics, geo-political power shifts, economic trends, cultural trends, religious sentiments, and associated analysis by subject matter experts.

Like another Yoruba adage will say - Ogun asotele, kiipa aro. (The foretold war does not kill the physically challenged)

So, can you say that you are sensitive and environmentally aware?

Have you failed lately?
Failure at something is proof that you are doing something new. It is proof that you are trying. It is proof that you are up to something. More importantly, it proves that you are on your way to success.
Every time you fail at something, you learn how not to do it, consequently reducing the odds of failure and increasing the odds of success. Your failure is simply you eliminating wrong options from a set of options, and every time you fail, you eliminate one more wrong option.
Failure also gives you insight, opening the portal of innovation as you are forced to think your way through the challenge. Failure also allows you to evaluate, learn, and grow.
And quite honestly, if you are not failing, you are not living. If you are not failing, you are not growing.
Think of businesses that pivoted after a failure and became huge successes in the new direction.
Imagine the opportunities for growth and success they would have missed out on if they had succeeded in their original enterprise.
Did you know that Twitter (now X) originally was known as Odeo - a network where people could find and subscribe to podcasts, but the founders feared the company’s demise when iTunes began taking over the podcast niche, and pivoted into a micro-blogging platform?
Did you know that Starbucks started in 1971 selling espresso makers and coffee beans, before it transformed into the world’s biggest coffee shop?
Did you know that Suzuki the automotive industry leader began by selling weaving loom machines that powered Japan’s silk industry before pivoting into automotives?
Did you know that Nokia began as a Finnish paper mill in 1865; and created a wide variety of products throughout the 20th century including rubber goods, electronics and telecommunications devices, and eventually their first mobile phone in 1992?
In Tony Robbins's words: “Failure, life’s challenges – they offer the greatest lessons and on the other side, the greatest rewards. If you’re open to the call”.
So I ask again, "Have you failed lately?"

I believe everybody is fundamentally by design an entrepreneur and should see themselves as one!

Not entrepreneurship the way it is being defined academically.

If you think about it, before industrialization, which was the agrarian age, while most people worked on farms, others were painters, singers, hunters, doctors and any other profession you can imagine. Individuals practised these professions without being employees in any structured organization. They were all entrepreneurs in their rights. Every single one of them.

I know that the Oxford Dictionary and many other sources define entrepreneurship along the lines of "the activity of setting up a business or businesses, taking on financial risks in the hope of profit".

It is not true…at least not completely.

Which is why I do not accept that definition of entrepreneurship.

The process of generating any monetary revenue involves entrepreneurship.

That is why I Anthony Onyemauwa define entrepreneurship as "the identification, optimization and maximization of opportunities to add value and extract monetary value in return™ ".

This means that as an employee, you are also an entrepreneur because to get the job, you had to start by identifying the opportunity to add value to the organization, optimizing it by interviewing and proving that you are the best candidate, and maximizing it by putting in exemplary work to ensure that you are retained, and in return extract monetary value in the form of a salary.

As a business owner, you have to identify the opportunity to add value by identifying a consumer or market need, and then optimize and maximize this opportunity by producing, pricing, promoting and placing the product for the consumer to access, and in exchange or as a reward get monetary value.

The bottom line is that whether you are employed or own a business, you practice entrepreneurship.

The difference between you and an organization is the scope and structure. Don’t be deceived into thinking that entrepreneurship is for a select special few.

You are originally, by default configuration, an entrepreneur!

LIMITING MINDSETS YOU MUST DUMP TODAY (3)

Two days ago I began a series on limiting mindsets you must dump to achieve your potential as a person, business, or nation.

The first two mindsets I wrote about are:

No.1 Dependence on prayers and luck.
No.2 Waiting for change to happen.

Feel free to check my previous two posts for the fuller story.

The third limiting mindset you must dump today to achieve your potential as a person, business or nation is TALKING BIG WITHOUT CORRESPONDING ACTION.

Yes, we live in an age of "fake it till you make it". But faking it does not excuse putting in the actual work required to make it. Besides, that saying is supposed to be inspirational and not supposed to be lived out literally. It speaks to the need to believe in yourself, work and walk in faith as though you can achieve your goals so that you can picture yourself in your desired future and attract the resources and people you need to get you there.

The psychological challenge with talking big without following up with corresponding action is that when you speak about something huge you intend to do, psychologically, your mind ticks it off as done, and if you do not follow it up with the required action, your mind feels satiated already, and you will feel satisfied without actually getting the job done.

Think of it as a timid man with love interests in a lady, who talks about his future with the lady all day, and instead of walking up to her, spends his days fantasizing about all they will do together. The more he fantasizes, the lesser his resolve will be to walk up to her because every time he fantasizes, his brain deceives him into believing that his mission has been accomplished.

Talk big if you must, but don't stop at that. Act big too. Follow up your big talk with corresponding big action.

LIMITING MINDSETS YOU MUST DUMP TODAY (2)

Yesterday I began a series on limiting mindsets you must dump. I wrote about how dependence on luck and prayers is a limiting mindset. I also specifically focused on Nigerians as Nigerians are among the most guilty of this mindset in the world.

This brings me to the second limiting mindset you must dump today to achieve your potential as a person, business, or nation.

WAITING FOR CHANGE TO HAPPEN.

While change is constant, waiting for it to happen takes away your control and leaves you at the mercy of others, society, and life. If you want something, you must take action to bring it to life. When you are hungry, you don't wait and hope that you will get fed, or that the hunger will go away. When you are pressed, you don't wait and expect your bladder to quit complaining and the pressure will disappear. When you have clothes on the line outside, and it begins to drizzle, you don't wait and hope that the rain will see that you have clothes outside, and hold its downpour until you bring the clothes in. Why?

Because hope is not a strategy. Inspired and thoughtful action is.

If you are tired of living from hand to mouth, and your take home only manages to take you halfway home, or you would like to earn more so you can do more, you actively seek financial literacy. You actively learn how to make, manage, and multiply money. After learning, you put it into practice. And when you fail, like you likely would, you take your learnings and try again.

If you want to get ahead in your career, you develop yourself, put in your exemplary best at work, get mentors, and practice all you learn.

Bringing this to the societal level, if you want good governance, you don't wait and hope it will happen. You demand it. You hold office holders at all tiers accountable. You model good behaviour at home, at work, and in your community. If your representative in government is not representing you well, you recall the fellow. And when elections come, you ensure you vote for the right candidate.

Remember, if wishes were horses, beggars would ride.

So, dump the mindset of "que sera sera" because if whatever you want in your life to be must be, it is up to you and you only.

LIMITING MINDSETS YOU MUST DUMP TODAY. (No.1)

I strongly believe that environment and experiences shape not only human behaviour. but also mindset and world-view. These shared experiences over time have a way of subconsciously or unconsciously steering group behaviour in a direction. And then herd mentality sets in to align even those with a lower degree of shared experience. To act differently from the herd even when exposed to the same environment and experiences, one has to be an intentional outlier. Unfortunately, due to the very minute number of outliers in every population, the pervasive behaviour of the crowd is usually the basis for defining the average member of the crowd.

Nigerians for instance who live in Nigeria and have experienced Nigeria probably all their lives have certain behaviours that are a product of their exposure to the Nigerian political and socio-economic environment. Some of these mindsets such as resilience, faith, indefatigability, and optimism are positive, commendable and almost enviable. However, many more are limiting and directly and indirectly responsible for the present reality of Nigeria and Nigerians. I will speak to some of them in the next couple of posts.

No.1 DEPENDENCE ON PRAYERS AND LUCK.

As of October 2024, Nigeria was the 7th biggest sports betting market in the world with an estimated value of $2.9 billion. As of then, Nigerians spent roughly $15 daily on sports betting, and an estimated 60 million individuals between 18 and 40 years old were actively involved in sports betting in Nigeria as per Yahoo Finance.

I am sure that would have increased by up to 50% now.

It is almost impossible to walk through 3 streets in any semi-urban or urban city in Nigeria without finding at least one religious centre. Nigeria boasts of the most and the biggest worship centres in the world.

What do these tell you?

The average Nigerian depends on the luck of sports betting and the prayers they make in worship centres. While some luck may be needed to succeed as a person, and it is wise to pray, personal, business and national success is hinged on principles, working systems, values, and good leadership.

If the average Nigerian must succeed and achieve their full potential, the focus should be on hard work, smart work, capacity development, critical thinking, and not luck and prayer.

Over the weekend, I had the opportunity to facilitate at my local church’s men’s fellowship on the topic: "Building a sustainable network".

While I am sure that the session was value-adding and engaging based on the feedback I got as I spoke and by the deluge of questions that came my way during the engaging Q&A session, during my preparation for the session, I was even more amazed at the importance of one’s network and network to personal happiness, success, fulfilment and even longevity.

Quite simply, your network constitutes everybody you know and have a mutual relationship with and everybody they know and have a mutual relationship with. And everything you want in life can be found within that network circle. Little wonder it is generally said and believed that your network determines your net worth.

In my presentation to the audience, I defined networking as the creation and maintenance of these mutually beneficial relationships I referenced earlier in my network definition. It is finding, developing, and maintaining personal and professional connections to add mutually beneficial value.

I also stated that networking is a tool (Because it can be used), an investment (because it has ROI), and most importantly, networking is a life skill. The life skill aspect of networking is very fundamental to survival and is evident in the animal kingdom where even the king of the jungle hunts in a pack of other Lions, and the day one Lion is excommunicated from the pack marks the beginning of the end of the life of that Lion.

The benefits of networking are innumerable. Networking opens doors to new opportunities, facilitates the exchange of ideas and best practices, and aids in career development, career security, personal growth, and business success. Perhaps, the most important of networking is that it gives you access – which I believe is the primary catalyst of professional and business success.

However, I did not hesitate to advise the audience to be intentional when networking and to have a strong WHY for networking with anybody. I also informed them that networking is like farming where you have to start by giving over a while before you can hope of getting back in return. But if you give and nurture well and long enough, the return on investment is always worth the effort.

In my presentation, I referenced Frigyes Karinthy’s six degrees of separation, which posits that you can connect any two people in the world by five other people, or six steps of interconnection, thus creating a chain of acquaintances.

I also encouraged the audience to adopt the Ivan Misner 24-7-30 Follow-up System of Networking if they needed a practical formula for networking effectively.

I closed out my presentation by admonishing the audience to follow the golden rule of networking which may be found in Luke 6:31. "Treat others like you will want to be treated".

Networking done right, i.e., sustainably, is a win-win situation for everyone.

🎶Abraham's blessings are mine🎵...

🎵I am blessed in the morning, I am blessed in the evening...Abraham's blessings are mine🎶

Are you aware that the morning and evening blessings referred to in that song are dual?

1. Round the clock blessings (24 Hours) even when you are sleeping.

2. Morning and Night of your life, that is your youth/active working days, and your night/retired from work days.

Can you say for sure that your present employment speaks truly to those two interpretations of blessed in the morning and in the evening, and can guarantee them?

Hey You!

I know that selecting the right business is usually your biggest challenge if you are looking to increase your stream of income. Hence this post.

If you have ever wondered what kind of business suits you best based on your strengths and experience, this post is for you.

Based on a combination of value offered, your personality, educational background, and professional experience, there are five types of businesses you can do.

1. TRANSFORMATIONAL BUSINESS
Are you exceptionally good at managing processes, leading and growing teams, managing different types of customers and clients, and managing stakeholders?

Have you ever successfully worked at an organization as a project manager, product manager, or accounts manager?

Have you always believed that you could improve on a process and make it commercially viable?

Are you presently in middle management and have been planning your entrepreneurship journey for a while now?

If you answered YES to the questions above, you will do well in starting and managing a transformational business.

A transformational business focuses on transforming things from a raw state to a finished state. E.g: Cotton to Cloth, Cassava to Garri, Farmland to Farm Produce. Think manufacturing, production, factory, agency, school, church, etc.

Ambitious professionals who had already pre-planned an exit from corporate practice, usually at middle-level management level tend to fit this kind of business.

This is because, as entrepreneurs, they are enterprise and production biased and are natural leaders good at building teams, and managing projects and processes due to their corporate background.

Transformational business owners are knowledge thirsty doers who usually are educated above average, but are strong in ex*****on.

Founders of transformational businesses have a deep conviction about the purpose of the business and have a history of performance as employees.

This helps the business start easily and survive the early storms of entrepreneurship.
