How does one cope with situations like this? Life is hectic, and today's life schedule demands that we eat good food. And eating all the food the body needs daily is extremely difficult. Worse still is that, the ones we have at our disposal is either stressful, unhygienic or adulterated.
Yam is a daily nutritional food requirements for man and pounding it is a special preference for Nigerians. Pounded Yam was, is and will continue to be the most preferred food in Nigeria. Some Nigerians wonder how the natural wholesome pounded yam is becoming extinct. Many others realised they have to go very far in order to get the ideal thing. While many more have resorted to alternatives they console themselves with...... Flour Pounded yam ( a thing of serious concern to health professionals ).
Social economic activities is so tasking now that the reemergence of upwardly mobile and busy professionals have become inevitable, and no one is prepared to engage in mortar & pestle as:-
i . It is stressful, tedious and delay bound.
ii. It is unhygienic as the pounder can splash sweat or mucus while pounding. Also when mortar is washed, particles of yam can stick in crevices and decays. It will certainly mix with fresh pounded next time you are pounding.
iii. It is unfair for a husband to expect the wife to go through the ordeal of pounding after her own equally tasking job simply because he wants to eat pounded yam.

i . Did you know they contain BHT ( Butylated Hydroxytoluene ), a compound often added to preserve & prevent rancidity of fats?
ii. Did you know that research proves that chemical properties which makes BHT an excellent preservative also have negative health effects as persons who have difficulties in metabolising may experience negative health and behavioral changes?
iii. Did you know the National Toxicology Program (NTP) in America listed it as one of the agents reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen on the basis of experimental findings in animals?
iv. Did you know that Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) warns that BHT should not be allowed to enter the environment?
v. Did you know even for children it is more dangerous, as continuous exposure of the body to these additives makes the body vulnerable to liver problems?
vi. Did you know some others contain food starch and 8% sodium added to the yam granules? And that high levels of Sodium consumption exposes one to the risk of high blood pressure, heart or kidney diseases? Especially when it stays longer shelf life.
vii. Did you even know it is twice costlier than cooking and pounding yam? As the price of 1kg which serves an average of 7-8 people will buy yam you can pound for not less that 15 people.
The truth is " if it is not pounded yam, it can not be like pounded yam ".
