‎When I first saw this banner, the first thought that came to my mind was "obituary" like I thought it was a banner announcing the man's deäth.

‎To confirm I wasn't alone, I had to show my girl the banner without a word to her, the very first question she asked me was what happened to him? She felt someone I know had just d*ed.

‎And I know we are not alone, a lot of people might have gotten same feeling.

‎The question is why is it so?

‎Well, here's the reason
When you see that "EZIOYI 2026" at the top, the Angel image, the Navy blue background. "The family of LATE Mr/Mrs..." Your brain might just conclude "this one don join his ancestors".

‎It took me reading the text to realize it was actually a ceremonial banner announcing an "Iwa Akwa" Ceremony.

‎Being that I don't even understand what "iwa Akwa" means in Igbo land, I had to check google to understand what the ceremony is all about.

‎It was then I realized it's a traditional age-grade related ceremony. Like, this is supposed to be the Celebrant celebrating a MAJOR milestone. The banner is supposed to show a JOYFUL occasion of Pride, Achievement and Status.

But here's the design working very hard to make it look like a sad obituary event.

"Can you make this logo... bigger? No, bigger. BIGGER."

We've all been there. 😂

But here's what I learned from a finance client who kept asking for logo tweaks: They weren't actually talking about the logo. They were worried their company didn't look "established enough" next to competitors.

The logo wasn't the problem. Their confidence was.

Now when clients want to "make changes" I ask: What's the real concern here? What are you trying to achieve?

Sometimes they need a bigger logo. Sometimes they need a better story. Sometimes they just need someone to tell them their company IS credible.

Design is therapy disguised as pixels and vectors.

Currently working through this with a client who keeps saying "maybe we need a rebrand" but really means "help us feel more confident about our positioning."

The finance industry is one industry I know that is brilliant at creating value but terrible at explaining it in human terms.
