Court Sentences Man to 13 Years Imprisonment and 20 Lashes for Assaulting Minor in Minna
​A court in Minna, Niger State, has sentenced Aliyu Bala to 13 years imprisonment and 20 strokes of the cane after finding him guilty of s*xually assaulting his neighbor’s 10-year-old daughter. The court additionally ordered the convict to pay ₦250,000 in compensation to the victim.
​Following the ruling, Bala was taken to the Hakimi Palace in Bosso, where the corporal punishment was publicly executed in the presence of community members.
​Barrister Ummul-kalthume Muhammad, Director-General of the Niger State Child Rights Agency, stated that the public enforcement serves as a stern warning against child abuse and urged communities to stop shielding offenders. Representatives from the state's Ministry of Justice noted that the judgment sets a critical precedent for handling similar cases in the future.​
