That Fear Might Just Be a Mirage

Recently, I started working out at a new gym.
Last Friday, my gym buddy told me there’s a group aerobics and yoga class that happens early on Saturdays and encouraged me to give it a try.
I laughed and told her, “Group classes aren’t really my thing"
But the truth? It’s not just that I don’t like them.
They intimate me.

Anyway, we got to the gym on Saturday and, surprise..there was a dance session right before the general aerobics/yoga class.
I almost froze there. Lol..
As she nudged me to join in, my usual reflex kicked in.
I looked at her and said, “I don’t know how to dance. I can't dance to save my life and I probably won’t keep up.”
But then I paused for a moment and asked myself, why am I always backing out of group classes?

And here’s what I realized:
1. I was afraid people would laugh at me if I didn’t get the steps right.
2. I was scared I couldn’t keep up with the pace and would end up quitting halfway, and feel ashamed.

So, where did those fears come from?

They came from my experience at my former gym. I tried dance classes and group classes a few times&I couldn’t keep up. So, I stopped showing up.
I talked myself into believing that I couldn't dance no matter how I tried.
Plus, one of my gym buddies back then, who had been working out way before I even started, used to call me “lazy” for not matching her pace or completing a group class. So, I unconsciously tried to avoid being called "lazy" by avoiding group classes.

To be fair, it was her own way of encouraging me, but I didn't realise early enough that it made me feel inadequate until that Saturday morning.
Once I realized the sources of my fears, it became easier to face them.

Suddenly, the idea of disappointing myself, and the person I’m accountable to on this journey felt worse than any fear I was feeling in that moment.

And here’s the funny thing…
I had been searching for a gym nearby that had a dance instructor for so long and couldn’t find any.
Then, by some miracle, I joined a gym that actually has one and I was about to miss the opportunity? No way!

So, I told myself that, “Even if someone laughs at me, that’s okay.” Because if I stay consistent, six months from now, no one will be laughing.
They will be admiring how far I have come, and maybe even asking me for tips.

So I joined the class.
Yes, I stepped out a few times.
Yes, I laughed at myself now and then.
But I stayed. I finished the class.

And honestly? I am proud I did.

Now? I’m looking forward to the next one.

Today, I challenge you:
What’s that thing you keep avoiding?
What’s holding you back from something that could actually improve your life?

Be real with yourself.
No sugarcoating. No shame. Just honesty.

A lot of the time, the things we fear are just a mirage.
Start facing them, one step at a time.
Cheers to a better, stronger, freer you. 💪✨

From Cleaner to Graduate: A Story of Grit, Growth, and Gratitude

In my former workplace, there was this young man who worked as a cleaner:vibrant, full of life, and with so much potential.

One day, I caught myself wondering: What would become of him if he worked all his productive years as a cleaner?

So I asked him his plans for himself and he said, “I want to go to school.”
I was happy! So, I followed up with, “And what happens after school?”
He replied, “I’ll get a job.”

“Perfect,” I said. “Then let’s start preparing now.”

I offered to place him in any department he liked for training. I told him I’d make sure he got at least an hour daily to practice with a desktop or laptop in the office so he could learn some skills.

I even suggested he rotate through departments to gain broader experience, but to start with one that handled a lot of data. That way, he could learn analysis and reporting.

I laid out so many options for him. I wanted him to have skills that would support him through school and give him an edge after graduation. But... he didn’t seem very interested.

Now, here’s the thing: after his morning cleaning duties, he was mostly free until evening. And since he had access to the company’s WiFi, he’d often just pass the time watching movies.

So I thought:why not use that time to learn something that could change his life? But he resisted me and the idea.

Maybe I came on too strong or he felt I was forcing my ideas on him.
But, things didn’t go well at first. I’m pretty sure he didn’t like me much then. Lol.

After a loooong time, I noticed him sitting close to some colleagues while they worked.

I asked my colleagues to involve him in tasks that weren’t sensitive(if they didn't mind), just to give him a chance to try things out if he was open to it. And slowly, he started opening up to the idea of learning.

I was so happy to see him finally betting on himself.

Not long after, he got into school.
When it was time for I.T., he didn't need to search far, we were happy to have him placed in our Company, because, he had already picked up some basic skills and shown he was serious. So it was easy for us to support him further.

I have since resigned from the organisation but still checked in on him from time to time.

One day, he messaged me to say thank you for encouraging him.
Then not long ago, he told me he had just defended his final-year project. And finally, he’d signed out of school yesterday and dedicated his sign-out to me😳🥺
Now, this same young man who once seemed to resent my “pushiness” now calls me “Sis", and I like it!

I am convinced that L has changed the entire course of his life, simply because he bet on himself.
He could have allowed his background to limit him. Believe me, he didn't have it easy but he did it!
Today, I’m beyond proud of L.
He did this!

To anyone reading this, bet on yourself. Time flies. Whether or not you make a move, time keeps moving.

Last week, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu signed four (4) Tax Reform Bills into law.

These laws include

1. The Nigeria Tax Act (NTA)

2. The Nigeria Tax Administration Act (NTAA),

3. The Nigeria Revenue Service Act (NRSA) and

4. The Joint Revenue Board Act (JRBA), and there have been a lot of conversations around this development.

Based on my understanding of this reform, here are the top goals it’s set to achieve:

Reset the tax system: make it more modern and efficient

Make taxation fairer

Close loopholes

Increase the country's revenue

Encourage and support business growth

Exempt the poor completely from taxation

As HR professionals, this isn’t just a finance or government issue: it will have an impact on our organization's business, payroll processing, and employee satisfaction..

The tax reform will take effect on January 1st, 2026, so we have about 6 months to get things in order.

Here are some of the things we can do to align with the new laws:

Understand the reforms: Go beyond the headlines. Study the details. It will help you engage your management teams and other stakeholders with confidence.

Engage your management team: Discuss how this may impact your Company’s business, payroll management, vendors, contractors, etc.

Sensitize your stakeholders: This includes staff, contractors, vendors, etc

Update your payroll system: Any employee earning less than ₦800,000 annually should no longer be taxed. Make sure the new tax brackets/bands are properly implemented.

Train your HR team: Equip your internal team to answer questions correctly and support staff through this transition.

Update your onboarding checklist: Going forward, TIN (Tax Identification Number) should be a required field for new hires.

If you have more suggestions or ideas on how HR teams can navigate this new phase, I would love to hear them.

Wishing you a productive week ahead.

What kind of manager do you prefer?

1. Strict but considerate: Has clear expectations, holds everyone accountable, but always treats people with fairness and respect. Offers support when it matters, even if they're firm about results.

2. Friendly, work focused only: Approachable and supportive when it comes to tasks and teamwork, but keeps a healthy distance. Doesn’t ask about your personal life or monitor your online presence. Keeps it professional.

3. Wants to know all about you: Truly cares, sometimes a little too much. Follows your social media and brings it up in conversation. Asks personal questions not to pry, but to offer support and feel closer as a team.

4. Only connects when asked to: Hands-off and trusting. Won’t micromanage or check in unless you need them. They believe in your independence and expect you to take full ownership of your work.

Thank God It’s Monday!

Did you rest over the weekend, or was it another “blink and it’s over” one?😊

Let’s be honest, especially people living in our busy cities, many people resume work on Monday not refreshed, but already worn out..like the weekend didn’t happen.

Can we blame them though?

From Monday to Friday, it’s work, meetings, traffic, deadlines, repeat... Then comes Friday night, and finally, “life” begins.
There’s so much to squeeze in: events, hangouts, social catch-ups, Church, house fellowship, special deliverance programs, errands that have been patiently waiting since Tuesday… before you know it, boom, it’s Monday morning and your alarm is dragging you up by 4 a.m.

No judgment, I get it.
But, running this way every week will affect your productivity and performance at work. Even your health will suffer, eventually(God forbid)

Here are a few simple ways to have a restful weekend:
1. Set boundaries: You really can’t be everywhere. You can't do everything for everyone, too.
2. Discipline yourself : Rest is not optional. Schedule it and respect your schedule.
3. Ask for help. Outsource what you can. Delegate what you must. Don't do the chores all alone when someone else can help.
Remember: don’t kill the goose that lays the golden egg. (Yes, you are the goose.)

Have a productive week!

To the New HR Professional,

Welcome to a profession where everyone thinks you should already have all the answers.

The moment you're recruited into HR, people tend to assume you know everything: from payroll and recruitment to labor law and conflict resolution.
Your title, level of experience, or specific area of expertise? Often overlooked. To them, you're simply "HR."

Even employers sometimes fall into this mindset. You're hired as an HR officer but expected to perform like a CHRO. And let’s be honest, that kind of pressure can feel unfair.

It can make you question yourself. It can leave you feeling inadequate or guilty for not knowing it all.

While sometimes it might motivate you to grow quickly, more often than not, it leaves new professionals overwhelmed, burned out, and doubting their worth.

But here's what you need to remember:
HR is not a one-size-fits-all job. It’s a broad, complex, and ever-evolving field, just like medicine, law, or tech.
No one, not even the most seasoned HR leader, has all the answers all the time.
And no one expects doctors or lawyers to know everything on day one.
So why should HR be any different?

You deserve the time and space to grow. You deserve the right to learn, to make mistakes, and to ask questions.

So if you’re feeling the weight of expectations, pause. Breathe. You are not failing. You are learning.

Dear new HR professional,
Don’t lose yourself trying to be everything to everyone.
Give yourself permission to be a beginner. Actually, at every level, give yourself grace.
Celebrate the progress, not perfection.
Consistently hone your skill.
Respect your journey, it’s uniquely yours.

You’re not just “HR.”
You are human.
