African Entrepreneurs:
Don't Wait Until You Need Funding Before You Start Looking for It.
Across Africa, there are funding programmes, grants, accelerators and innovation challenges designed to help entrepreneurs launch, test, grow and scale.
Here are some worth keeping on your radar:
πΉ D-Prize β up to $20,000 for new organisations distributing proven solutions to poverty-related challenges. Its next global competition is expected in Fall 2026.
πΉ Tony Elumelu Foundation (TEF) β $5,000 non-refundable seed capital, alongside training and mentorship for selected African entrepreneurs. The 2026 programme is already underway, so entrepreneurs should watch for the next cycle.
πΉ GSMA Innovation Fund β equity-free funding and technical assistance for qualifying digital and mobile-enabled innovations. GSMA continues to run thematic funding rounds.
πΉ Global Innovation Fund (GIF) β supports high-impact innovations in emerging markets through different forms of finance. GIF announced a new $50 million+ GIF Growth vehicle in July 2026.
πΉ AYuTe Africa Challenge β particularly relevant to African agritech entrepreneurs. Heifer's programme supports technology-driven agricultural enterprises, with national and regional funding opportunities.
πΉ Google for Startups programmes β Google continues to offer accelerator, AI, cloud and other forms of non-dilutive support to eligible African startups. Its previous Black Founders Fund Africa should not, however, be treated as currently open.
πΉ African innovation prizes and competitions β including opportunities around agriculture, health, ICT, energy, manufacturing and social innovation. These can provide funding, visibility and access to networks.
And this is only a starting point.
The real challenge is not simply finding a grant.
It is finding the right opportunity for your business, understanding the eligibility requirements, preparing the right documents, developing a convincing proposal and submitting before the deadline.
My advice to African entrepreneurs:
Don't chase every grant. Chase the grant that fits your venture.
