Ẹyin èèyàn mi òní LUXURY brands!
Should we talk about what really makes a luxury brand luxury, or should we keep hyping nonsense?
Real luxury is not just about price; it is about value that endures. The reason informed wealthy people buy luxury is not hype, but because luxury can be an asset.
What makes luxury an asset?
Scarcity, brand history, craftsmanship, and collector demand are what turn a luxury item into something investment-like.
For example, Sotheby’s notes strong collector demand for Birkin and Kelly bags, while Business Insider reports that the Birkin and Kelly average about 1.7 times retail price on the resale market . Rolex also remains strong in the secondary market for selected models, though premiums have softened recently.
Some items, like Hermès Birkin bags, Rolex watches, and select limited-edition pieces, do more than hold value - they can become more desirable and more expensive over time because of their rarity, craftsmanship, and reputation. But in Nigeria, too many people buy “luxury” mainly for instant hype and social media status rather than lasting worth, and market reports show social media strongly shapes luxury demand there.
So before you call your brand a luxury brand, ask whether it has the five things luxury actually demands:
Scarcity.
Craftsmanship.
Heritage.
Exclusivity.
Emotional value.
If those are missing, what you have may be premium, expensive, or trendy - but not luxury.
