FG Reduces Subject Load in Nigerian Schools — New Curriculum Implementation Begins September

For years now, Nigerian schools have quietly overloaded children with 18, 20… even 25 subjects across different classes. Children are stretched, and teachers are racing against time just to “cover syllabus.”

Now, a new direction has come.

From September, the new NERDC curriculum is expected to begin implementation across Nigerian schools, and one thing is clear already — subject load is being streamlined.

At the Primary level, children will now focus on a more structured set of subjects, with clear limits:

Primary 1–3: about 9 to 10 subjects

Primary 4–6: about 11 to 13 subjects

JSS 1-3: about 13-14 subjects

No unnecessary overload. More focus. Better learning depth.

At the Senior Secondary level, subjects are now grouped properly into:

Core subjects

Science, Humanities, and Business tracks

Plus one compulsory trade subject

And students are to take about 9 or 10 in all.

This means students are not just reading to pass exams, but also learning practical skills like fashion design, solar installation, agriculture, and more.

Controversial Nursery Textbook Sparks Outrage as Lagos Government Confirms It Was Not Approved

A viral video has sparked serious concern among parents after a nursery school English textbook containing disturbing and questionable content surfaced online.

The passage, which has been widely circulated, has raised multiple questions around suitability, safety, and quality of learning materials being used for young children.

In response, the Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education has issued an official statement confirming that the textbook in question was not approved, reviewed, or recommended for use in any public or approved private school in the state.

According to the Ministry, investigations have already commenced following directives from the Honourable Commissioner for Education. Preliminary findings indicate that the school involved is located in Ojo Local Government Area.

The Ministry also reiterated its position clearly:
Only government-approved textbooks are permitted for use in schools, and all learning materials must meet standards of age-appropriateness, moral soundness, and educational quality.

This development has again brought attention to a critical issue many parents and educators quietly worry about — what exactly are children being taught, and who is verifying these materials?

The controversial passage has triggered conversations around:
– appropriateness of content for nursery pupils

– exposure to violence and harmful ideas at an early age

FG Moves to Control School Textbooks — Only Top-Ranked Books Will Be Allowed

The Federal Government has announced a new system that will change the textbooks used in Nigerian schools.

Going forward, textbooks will not just be approved… they will be ranked nationally, and only a limited number of top-ranked books will be allowed for each subject.

This means:
– Some textbooks currently in use may no longer be permitted
– Only selected, high-quality books will make the final list
– Schools will have fewer but more standardized options

The policy will be implemented from September 2026, after proper evaluation and stakeholder engagement.
Now this is important for schools and parents.

Schools should be careful about rushing to purchase textbooks for the next session.

There is a high chance that some of those books may not make the approved ranking list.

It may be wise to wait for the official list before making bulk decisions.
