There is a quiet battle happening in our schools right now. It is no other battle than the battle between the curriculum we say we have adopted and the way we are still teaching.

And this is where things get interesting.

Take a close look at the new Nigerian curriculum and you begin to see the thinking behind it.

The progression is deliberate. Concepts are introduced, revisited and extended rather than simply repeated year after year. There is a stronger emphasis on competencies and what the learner can actually do with knowledge.

It is absolutely beautiful because whenever a nation wants to change, one of the places it eventually has to begin is the curriculum.

The child sitting in a classroom today is the adult who will run that country tomorrow.

So when I look at the new curriculum, I don't just see subjects and topics. I see an attempt to shape what Nigerian children will know, how they will think and what they will be able to do.

And that is why I am a little concerned about what is happening around it.

There is so much confusion.
Where exactly do we get the complete curriculum?
What exactly has changed?
What does this mean for the teacher in the classroom?
What should the parent expect?
And then there are the textbooks.
You see “revised edition” everywhere, but sometimes you open the book and realise that what has changed on paper has not necessarily translated into a resource that helps the teacher understand the thinking behind the curriculum.

Sometimes it feels like we have taken the curriculum, changed the cover of the conversation and called it implementation.

But the real work is understanding the why.

Because if we don't understand why the curriculum has changed, we may simply teach the new topics with the old mindset.
And then we have missed the point.

This is bigger than textbooks.
Bigger than schemes of work and all of that.

It is about the kind of learner we are trying to raise.
And I really hope we don't lose that in the confusion.

Yesterday, I attended the press conference ahead of the 35th Anniversary celebration of Bere-Mont Group Limited , the parent company of Bereton Montessori School and Charles Dale Memorial International School Bereton Montessori School is marking an incredible 49 years, while Charles Dale Montessori School is celebrating 20 years, and Beremont Group itself is celebrating 35 years. These are remarkable milestones, and standing strong for this many years while continuing to remain a leading name in education is certainly no small achievement.

What particularly excited me during the press conference was hearing about the expansion plans of the Beremont Group and the vision they have for the future. It was beautiful to hear what the Group is bringing to the education landscape, not just in terms of growth, but in terms of the possibilities for creating greater impact in education.

I strongly believe that governments, international organisations and other key stakeholders who are passionate about transforming education in Nigeria and beyond should be looking forward to opportunities to partner with institutions like Beremont Group.

We need more strong institutions that have the experience, capacity, vision and staying power to contribute meaningfully to the development of education, and it was inspiring to hear about what lies ahead for the Group.

Congratulations to Beremont Group on 35 years, Bereton School on 49 years, and Charles Dale Montessori School on 20 years of impact.

I look forward to celebrate these remarkable milestones and the journey ahead.

RIVERS STATE GOVERNMENT DIRECTS ALL SCHOOLS TO RESUME SEPTEMBER 7

The Rivers State Ministry of Education has issued a fresh Public Interest Announcement reminding all public and private primary and secondary schools across the state that the 2026/2027 academic session begins on Monday, September 7, 2026.

But this announcement goes beyond simply stating the resumption date.

The Ministry is directing schools to commence academic and non-academic activities on the approved date and operate strictly in accordance with the prescribed guidelines.

Private schools have also been specifically reminded that they are required to adhere strictly to the government-approved academic calendar for the 2026/2027 academic session.

The announcement, dated September 3, 2026, is signed by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Rivers State, Her Excellency Dr. Mina Tele Ikuru.

School proprietors, administrators, parents and guardians have been urged to take note and comply accordingly.

So, as schools across Rivers State prepare to reopen on Monday, will schools be ready to fully comply with the approved calendar this session?
