*WHEN SOME PEOPLE HEAR AGRICULTURE ONLY FARMING GOES INTO THEIR MINDS*
But agriculture is utilizing Nature... Through the agricultural sector there are
1. Engineering works
2. Medical works
3. Legislative work
And so much more..

*Examples*
We are still importing the list agricultural tools, we lack storage facilities to utilize the outputs of our farmers, we lack good packaging companies to package our products for exportation

WHEN YOU TELL SOME PEOPLE COME INTO THE AGRICULTURAL SECTORS THEY TEND TO IGNORE IT BUT agricultural sector remains the most relevant and most sustainable sector.... With the rapid increase in population around the world.. It's relevance keep increasing.
Through agriculture we get
Biogas
Food
Shelter
Products use in production of drugs like the starch from cassava
And some many more

The job opportunities if agriculture is optimized in the country is huge in the country

In Greenhouses in the developed countries...
Engineers, medlab scientist and other professionals work there

In companies that has process farm produce in commercial quality like the carton turkey and others a lot of engineers and health sector workers work there to make the production a success..
*there are too much in agriculture to talk all about it in this presentation*

*SO WHEN NEXT YOU HEAR AGRICULTURE.. THINK ABOUT THE VALUE CHAIN AND INDUSTRIAL ASPECT AND NOT JUST FARMING*

SEE Malaysia, Indonesia, Taiwan and many other countries have found way to utilize their agricultural sector and we all can see the positive effect it's creating for the country

When you want to go into agriculture don't just go into with little commitment and little vison....start small and think Big because as much as your mind can conceive and believe, you can achieve

When going into agriculture ,go into it as a passive or active business and remember every business needs a business process for it to be sustainable... Learn the business process and not just the skills... In a business process you have the
Managerial process
Operational process
Marketing process
Growth plan and strategies and so many more

*CHOOSING AND PREPARING THE PLANTATION SITE*

CHOOSING THE SITE

If a cocoa tree is to grow well, it needs more than anything else a soil
of good structure,
permeable and deep.

The cocoa tree has tap-roots.
The tap-root descends straight into the soil.

The branch roots go down very deep.
But many small branch roots also grow near the surface.

If the soil is of good structure and contains much humus, the roots penetrqqate well.
You can improve the soil structure by spreading manure and working it into the soil.
If the soil is deep, the roots can go down to a good depth.

Never plant cocoa trees in soil with a lot of stones, or in soil where there is some hard layer.

*CLEARING THE SITE*

In Africa, cocoa is grown in forest regions.
To make a plantation, you must clear the site.
But the cocoa tree needs shade, especially when it is young.

The traditional method is to cut down all the trees and to burn everything.

But this is a bad method because:

You destroy all the organic matter in the w**ds, the leaves and the branches.

You leave the soil bare to the sun or rain.

The soil becomes less fertile.

The cocoa trees are not protected from the sun when it is too strong.

Sometimes growers put banana trees or taros into the cocoa plantation, to give shade for the young cocoa trees. If these are planted long enough before the cocoa trees, they give good protection.
But if they are planted at the same time as the cocoa trees, they do not protect the young cocoa trees well enough and they take nourishment out of the soil.

To give shade it Is better to keep a few of the forest trees.

You should cut first all the tall w**ds, the creepers and the small trees.
Make heaps of what you have cut down and arrange the heaps in rows.

It is better not to burn all the vegetation you cut.
Leave it on the ground.
It protects the soil against erosion and sun.
It rots and makes humus.
If you have to burn the vegetation you have cut, you must sow a cover crop.

Next, go through the plantation a second time:

Now cut down all the trees which might give some disease to the cocoa trees.
And cut down also all trees that give too much shade.
But leave those large trees which can give no disease to the cocoa trees, and which give a little shade.

When the cocoa trees have grown taller, they need less shade.
You should gradually give them less and less shade.
You should prune the big trees and cut off those branches that cast too much shade.
When the plantation is well cared for, you can cut down all the big trees.

When the cocoa trees have grown, it is better to get rid of the unwanted shade trees by using tree-killing chemical products. This way causes less damage than cutting them down.

*PREPARING TO PLANT COCOA TREES*

With traditional methods, planting is most often done in a haphazard way.
The cocoa trees are not planted in rows.
There is not the same distance between them.

When the trees are too far apart, they do not use all the soil; when they are too close, they grow badly.

Instead, you should always plant in rows.

First mark the rows for the cocoa trees, leaving about 2.5 to 3 metres between rows.
Along each row, mark out with pegs the spots where the cocoa trees are to go.
Leave about 2.5 to 3 metres between trees.

In this way you can plant about 1 000 to 1 600 seedlings per hectare.

*Digging the holes*

Before planting cocoa trees, the grower must dig holes in order to stir the earth and loosen it.
Dig the holes two months before planting the cocoa tre digging the hole*

Sometimes growers sow cocoa seeds straight away in the plantation.
This is a bad thing to do.

It is better to put into the plantation
either young cocoa seedlings from your own nursery beds,
or cocoa seedlings bought from a research centre.

A few hours before lifting the seedlings from the nursery beds, water the soil.
Then take the seedlings out of the nursery beds with a spade or a hoe.
Be very careful not to break the roots.

Next sort out the cocoa seedlings.
Throw away diseased plants and plants that have a twisted tap-root.
You can dip the roots of the seedlings in liquid mud, so that the cocoa plants take root again easily.

*When to plant cocoa trees*

Plant cocoa trees at the beginning of the rainy season.
Choose a day when the soil is moist and when the sky is cloudy.
Plant the young cocoa trees when they are about 6 months old.

*How to plant cocoa trees*

A few days before planting, fill in the holes you have dug.
At the bottom of the hole, put the soil you have dug out from the top, and on top put the soil you have dug out from below.
You may mix the soil with manure

When you are ready to plant, make a small hole.
In this small hole place your young cocoa seedling.
If you have sown your seeds in baskets or bags, make a hole big enough to hold the root ball with the cocoa seedling.
Be very careful not to twist the tap-root.

Do not cover the crown with earth.
Pack the soil down well around the tap-root.
For the first few days, protect the cocoa seedling from the sun.
If there are palm trees in your village, use a palm frond.

THE SECRET BEHIND SUCCESSFUL GINGER CULTIVATION

Ginger is one of the most valuable cash crops in Nigeria. Many countries like China are into ginger importation that is why people in the northern Nigeria embark on ginger cultivation. Ginger is highly medicinal and is used to cure many diseases including malaria and diabetes.

Many people find it difficult to cultivate ginger because they don’t know how is being cultivated. Some are ignorant of the economic importance. A hectare of land cultivated with ginger, produces 70 to 100 50kg bags of ginger, and a 50kg bag of ginger in Nigeria today is sold for ₦30,000, Which means in every hectare of land being cultivated with ginger, the farmer makes 2.1 to 3 million a year.

People in the northern part of Nigeria build houses and buy cars with the money they make from ginger cultivation. That is why a farmer who wants to succeed very fast will always consider going into ginger cultivation. Ginger is very easy to cultivate. The returns in ginger cultivation are far beyond the cost of production. People don’t know much about ginger production that is why they don’t embark in its cultivation. Ginger is very costly and the buyers are much both locally and internationally In successful ginger cultivation the following steps should be carefully followed;

STEP ONE
Prepare the, land very well, if the land is being used for continuous cropping then organic manure (waste from poultry pigs, and other animal waste) or compost manure should be broadcasted in the farm continuously so as to enrich the soil. Or if the soil which you have set apart for ginger cultivation is not rich enough, then enrich by adding organic manure. Make sure you spread the organic manure to cover the whole area of land, also make sure that the spread of manure is evenly distributed. If you have a tractor, then use your tractor to plough the land, so as to ensure evenly distribution of manure and also ploughing ensures that the manure is being mixed very well with the soil. Ploughing also enhances aeration and enables the manure to go deep inside the soil where the roots can benefit from them. When you are done with the manure application, allow rain to fall on it for the first time, and then when that happens, follow the next step immediately.

STEP TWO
Start planting immediately, but the question is how you plant so that you make harvesting very easy Ginger is a root crop and the roots spread in diverse places in the ground with no specific direction. Ginger is cultivated in columns or in rows in order to make harvesting very easy, that is to say, that if you plant in rows, harvesting would be done in rows and vice versa. Ginger planting is normally done by at least two persons with one opening the hole and the other inserting the seeds. Dig horizontally or vertically aligned lines of hole, of about 5 to 7cm deep. The line of hole should be continuous from starting to where it ends, before you take the next line. After opening the hole for the first time, the seed would be inserted, along that particular row. As you are opening the next line, the sand that is being dug out from the second line would be used to close the first line. That is to say that digging of new line of hole and closing of previous line of hole is done simultaneously. Repeat this continuously until the whole planting is finished. After this particular step has been completed, follow the next step immediately.

STEP THREE
This third step is called the insulation stage; in this stage the whole hectare of land is being covered with grasses. N/B; There are grasses that generate w**ds, such grasses are not supposed to be used. Elephant grass is an excellent material for this purpose. But if you don’t have elephant grass, you can try other grasses as time goes on you will be able to find the best for yourself. Use the grass to cover the whole area of land. Please always remember that proper insulation is key to successful ginger cultivation. Insulation is done so as to prevent direct sunlight from reaching the seeds. If direct sunlight reaches the seeds, the will dry up inside the ground, therefore germination will not occur. After the whole area of land has been properly insulated, the land would be left for about two to three weeks for the seeds to germinate.
When the seeds have successfully germinated, leave it to grow. The next step is how you can w**d. You don’t use machetes or cutlasses to w**d your ginger farm else you destroy the seeds in the course of w**ding.

Weeding in ginger farm is done with ordinary hand. Make sure you put on your safety boot and hand gloves before entering inside your ginger farm, so as to ensure safety. As the ginger progress in their growth, fertilizer can be applied so as to enhance growth rate and increase production, but if you have enough organic manure you can use them. I don’t know why people in the south-eastern and southern part of Nigeria are not into ginger production, even though their land is more fertile and productive than those in the northern part. Application of fertilizer or organic manure is done after w**ding. If you want to maximize profit always keep your ginger farm very neat. After you must have applied manure for the very first time after germination, your ginger will now use that manure to advance in growth. Leave your ginger until the leaves start drying. When the leaves start drying, you will now know that the ginger is due for harvesting then harvest horizontally or vertically just the same pattern you use in planting you will also use in harvesting. When you are digging, consider the depth of the seeds during planting, make sure you dig deeper than what you have dug during planting; this is to avoid damaging the seeds.
During harvesting, consider the next planting season; please always preserve the ones you want to use for the next planting season inside the ground that means you don’t have to harvest them until when the time of planting comes, you can now harvest and plant immediately. Harvesting those ones you want to use for the next planting season ahead of time will definitely affect the viability of the seeds, unless is being harvested and stored in the ground where no sun rays will destroy it. After harvesting, the next is how to preserve.

Preservation of ginger is very simple and does not cost anything. It is always good you preserve your ginger. Preserved/dried ginger has more market value than the wet one. That is why you need to dry your ginger so as to maximize profit. The ginger is being cut transversely or longitudinally. Splitting ginger longitudinally enhances drying .It can be done manually or mechanically Recently, a
lecturer in Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike in Abia State, Nigeria, designed a ginger splitting Machine, which splits ginger longitudinally. When you must have finished splitting the ginger, you spread it under the sun for it to dry. After drying the next thing is packaging and storage. Package the ginger in a 50kg bag or any type of bag of any capacity depending on how you want to sell your ginger. Store your ginger in a cool dry place, until the time you wish to sell.
